Harris County Fire Marshal: Generator Safety

Avoid using portable generators in apartment buildings or on apartment balconies

@ai6yr good grief... in this day and age people should be ditching generators anyway and going to things like Jackerys that you can easily charge via solar panel [or plug it into the wall when you do have power]
@MsMerope As much as you can, although that's tough to do for fridges and freezers. Great for charging your phone/computer and even running a small TV, though!

@ai6yr they have some big ones now that will run a frig for at least a few hours.

We experiment with our smaller ones and the solar panels and are sometimes able to balance out draw and charge to keep things running longer.

don't know if I'd trust a tesla power wall but I'd guess [ok, hope] that more things like that are coming along.

@MsMerope LOL on the not trusting a Tesla Powerwall. I considered it seriously before the whole Twitter fiasco and the rash of Lithium battery fires, and now I don't trust them at all...

@MsMerope @ai6yr

But the deadly fumes and the loud noise are how you know it's working 😐

@me_valentijn @MsMerope I realize this is actually a huge issue combined with the heat, when there are a lot of generators going and CO and exhaust everywhere, but people have to open their windows to avoid getting roasted to death in their homes... non-ideal.

@ai6yr @me_valentijn @MsMerope We fill a chest freezer with organic goodies from our garden. After storms here in the #PNW we have been without power for multiple days. Having a generator means we do not lose all the food.

We also live in an area of small acreage parcels so issues related to noise/CO/exhaust are not really factors. And of course the heavy cloud cover in the rainy season greatly decreases the effectiveness of solar panels.

@MsMerope my Jackery 880 + 100 watt solar panel from Harbor Freight kept my full size fridge running thru a recent 12 hour maintenance outage. No sweat. Still had 60% left at 8pm when the lights came back on. And I ran the coffee maker once!

@ai6yr

Unfortunately in bad/cloudy weather when you are likely to have a power failure solar cells don't put out much. If you use more of the power bank then the solar cells are charging it, the power bank will run out.

With a stash of gas, my generator will run for a couple of weeks and keep powering my very high draw sump pump and hopefully keep my basement from flooding.

Apartment dwellers should ditch generators but for home owners maybe not.

But all shouldn't count on TX's grid.

@ai6yr

I actually been doing a tech review of power stations for a purchase. I may start doing a part time van life.

I am looking at a Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus and a Alpicool CF35 Portable Car Refrigerator.

I can use these in a power failure and this combo is much more efficient than trying to power your home frig. They can go for days without even using solar cells. More with them.

Plus instead of $$$ sitting around waiting for a power failure I can take these with me and have fun.
