The conference “Commodore 64. Past, Present, and Future of a Home Computer“ is starting right now! Even 40 years after the release, the C64 is still the best selling home computer of all times, and it has induced numerous digital cultural movements since then. Join us online to learn more about this so fancy computer: https://www.medienwissenschaft.uni-bonn.de/tagungen/commodore-64-past-present-and-future-of-a-home-computer #retrocomputing #c64 #homecomputers Many thanks to @stefanhoeltgen for the organization!

Enjoying Michael Steils fantastic “Ultimate Commodore 64 Talk“! #C64 #6502CPU
Jens Schröter is now presenting software cracking practices on the #C64 using the Freeze Frame cartridge: "Freeze Frame. Cracking between Practice and Technology". Copy protection mechanisms turned out to serve as an incentive for the development of a cracking culture. Technologies are insofar fields of conflict - and modules like Freeze Frame are "inscriptions of oppositional practices" with real political effects #retrocomputing
@me_ talks about emulation history of the most emulated CPU on earth: "The Search for Perfection. MOS65xx and C64 Emulation Over Time". Fascinating how easy this works! However, optimizing performance and keeping the Emulation accurate at the same time is not that simple ... #retrocomputing #C64 You can join a workshop on Sunday!
@me_ Looking forward to Jesper Juul's talk on "The Five Lives of the Commodore 64"! So great to learn more about the cultural history of a home computer #retrocomputing #C64
@tub64 is now presenting the musical properties of the #C64 which made it such an outstanding machine, including some features that were not intended by the designers #retrocomputing #sidtunes
Second day starts with Melanie Swalwell directly from Melbourne! She talked about “Theorising 1980s Homebrew Game Development“ and presents aspects from her book on “Homebrew Gaming and the Beginnings of Vernacular Digitality“ (2021). The activities on the #C64 are only one of many many possible examples #retrocomputing #retroprogramming #homebrew #digitality
Now Martin Wendt takes us into imaginary adventures, old and new: “How the C64 started Point-and-Click adventures. A journey through the history of technical achievements on a guided tour“ Actually it was not the C64 to start them but Lucasfilm. And now the original technology is bring reenacted to create “Caren and the Tangled Tentacles“! #C64 #ManiacMansion #ZakMcKracken #retrocomputing #retrogaming #tentacles
Some slides and photos from my own presentation today: "Notions about the Past, Present, and possible Futures of Disk Magazines" - about mags vs. zines, about research on diskmags, about a "disk book" ... and a look 40 years ahead 😉 #retrocomputing #C64 #diskmags #zines cc @rettinghaus
My personal title award gots to Melanie Fritsch, who talks about "Me and My Brotkasten. Adressing Fannish Affect and Nostalgia in Historical Platform Research". How does "Alltagsgeschichte" works? How is research affected by the researcher's nostalgia (acafans)? And how does all this work in the case of C64 home computer culture? #retrocomputing #C64
Now Patryk Wasiak from Warsaw: "The C-64 tools in gamedevs and crackers’ toolkits". It is so interesting to learn about the workarounds when you had only a tape drive available but wanted to start a program that was developed for floppy disk drives! And there were cheat covers ... #C64 #retrocomputing #hacking #cracking
@hekabeohnename is presenting on the topic "Mapping the past: possibilities and boundaries of creating and using a historical DACH games database". The collection was conceptualized together with @Eugen_pfister @thgie @addrich @l17r and consists of a collaborative spreadsheet listing thousands of games. Collecting the data needs actually a lot of groundwork to fulfil the scholarly requirements of historians sufficiently! #retrocomputing #C64 #retrogaming (datasheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10GvW3KmuR9lbjwcdMp4YWJmqdTATkcrDahEKw5f9AKM/edit)

Today's final talk by @stefanhoeltgen: "A Localization of the Past, Present, and Future of Commodore". Practicing #retrocomputing needs people and physical places! So what about creating a real #Commodore #Museum in Germany? This is a vision how that could look 🤩 #C64
The C64 Symposium continues on Sunday morning with two exciting hands-ons: @me_ will teach you how to write your own 6502 emulator, while @stefanhoeltgen and me are code golfing with C64 BASIC V2.0. Details tomorrow! #retrocomputing #C64 #retrocoding #retroprogramming #emulation #codegolf #basic

Our #C64 Hackathon just started with some BASIC one-liners to warm up the keyboards and our hands. Can you guess what these four programs do? There is a whole book on the first one: https://10print.org #retrocoding #retrocomputing
10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10

About 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10, a book from the MIT Press

10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10
We have composed small programming exercises in three levels of difficulty (novice, amateur, professional) with some tricky handicaps. Can you output all numbers from 1 to 100 without using a cipher in your code? (except a line number) #retrocoding #codegolf #retrocomputing #c64
Some live examples by the participants! And we are also coding little games on golfball diving ⛳🤠 #C64 #golf #codegolf #retrocoding #retrocomputing
Silence in the building, the #C64 symposium is over. But the plannings for proceedings of the talks and also of the code golf have already started. Stay tuned, and now go outside and enjoy the day! 🌞 ... and btw, C64 patterns are also on the streets
The Rule30 can be done in one line of #C64 BASIC code 🤓
