The verses of This Land Is Your Land which you didn't learn in elementary school, and which are almost never sung (certainly not in the elementary school where I learned the song):

"As I went walking I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing.
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?"

@ai6yr If you've not seen it, the pure joy on Pete Seeger's face as he leads the unexpurgated version of that song at the Obama inauguration will brighten your spirit,. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnvCPQqQWds

@mattblaze That literally brings tears to my eyes, especially in today's political climate. It's almost too much. 😢
@ai6yr Right? Maybe we need a bit of that kind of optimism right now.
@mattblaze Remember watching that campaign - it was so inspiring.
@mattblaze @ai6yr we are so fortunate to have seen that. It’s getting dusty here.
@wtrmt @mattblaze I got a lot of dust in my eye about then, too.

@mattblaze @ai6yr
I used to sing this:

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York island,
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters;
This land was stolen for you and me.

@mattblaze @ai6yr
I saw Pete live in Santiago, Chile in 1988, during the death throes of the Pinochet dictatorship. Víctor Jara, a folksinger and national hero brutally killed by the dictatorship in 1973, had translated “If I Had a Hammer” into Spanish, modifying the tune somewhat to fit the new lyrical pattern.

People were pumped to see Pete, expecting Jara to return from the dead. When he sang the original version, in English, they booed him.

It was awful.

@adaitsman @ai6yr Oh, that's sad.
@mattblaze @ai6yr
It really was. I grew up on Pete and it was hard for me to sit through. I always wondered about his reaction to it.
@mattblaze @ai6yr I think the first time I saw Seeger perform was with the Weavers at the Hollywood Bowl.
@mattblaze Stop what you’re doing and listen to this.

Weird Fact: Our airport is named after a man who died in a plane crash (Will Rogers). In order to get to arrivals and departures, you must cross a road named after a woman who died in a plane crash (Amelia Earhart).

@angiebaby @ai6yr Could be worse. The main road to our airport is still named after a nazi (Charles Lindbergh).

@LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby Gah! I hadn't read all that about Lindbergh being a Nazi!!!! 😱

"The America First Committee, whose spokesperson was Charles Lindbergh, was founded in 1940 to support American isolation and Nazi appeasement. Lindbergh crossed the country to hold rallies that blamed Roosevelt and American Jews for pushing the country closer to war. "

American Nazism and Madison Square Garden | The National WWII Museum | New Orleans

Before World War II, the German-American Bund was one of the most successful pro-Nazi organizations in the United States. On February 20, 1939, American Nazis gathered at Madison Square Garden for a mass rally for “true Americanism.”

@ai6yr @angiebaby Oh yeah, he was fucking horrible. If you want more details, I recommend Rachel Maddow's book Prequel, or Philip Roth's novel The Plot Against America (which was also made into a good miniseries on HBO).
@LinuxAndYarn @ai6yr @angiebaby Ah you already mentioned it - sorry!
@ai6yr @LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby If you've not read or seen the HBO adaptation of Roth's The Plot Against America, it's a chilling alternate history of what almost was, from the perspective of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey.

@mattblaze @ai6yr @LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby

Related - it’s also highly likely, more than not, that egotistical Nazi activist Charles Lindbergh killed his own son - for being a less than perfect physical specimen.

@ai6yr @LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby The book Prequel and the podcast Ultra by Rachel Maddow tells the story of American Nazism and the America First activities. It is well told, bringing history that our public education tends to ignore. The extent of the conspiracies throughout the American government and people of influence is frightening; it follows so closely with the traitorous behavior we are experiencing today.

@ai6yr @LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby had Hitler not declared war on USA in support of Japan, the US would not have fought Germany at all. And with that enemy, aid to Britain would have ceased except on a purely cash basis.

@ai6yr whenever I see Lindbergh mentioned I start to hum woody Guthrie’s song about him, so I was tickled to see woody started this thread. Final lyrics have been burned in my brain the past 8 years.

“I’m going to tell you people if Hitler’s going to be beat, common working people have got to take the seat in Washington. And I’m going to tell you workers, before you cash in your checks, they say America first but they mean America next, in Washington.”

@LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby @ai6yr Huh, I always assumed it was named after Pelle Lindberg!

@LinuxAndYarn @angiebaby @ai6yr

I went to Lindbergh grade school in Little Falls where he grew up. It’s still called that. Funny they always held him up as a hero. That area is super conservative, I avoid it.

@ai6yr
I had the privilege of watching Joan Jett, Tom Morello, and Les Claypool play that version.

@ai6yr My favorite version of that song - a song that ought to be our National Anthem - was the version done by Sharon Jones (with or without the Dap Kings)

@karlauerbach @ai6yr This is the version that immediately came to mind when Ben posted those verses.
@ai6yr I once saw Arlo Guthrie perform that, and I think he sang the whole thing!
@blp Cool! That's awesome...

@ai6yr I was born & raised in Houston—it’s only a decade or so since I’ve realized just how good the elementary school I attended was, & how lucky I was to attend it. It was diverse, & many of our teachers were very smart & very progressive. We learned so much that other folks clearly didn’t.

This, for example. I was taught this entire song in 2nd grade. Probably because my music teacher was Barbara Jordan’s sister.

Texas schools teach fiction now, & it’s infuriating.

@ai6yr
My fave full version is by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
