The verses of This Land Is Your Land which you didn't learn in elementary school, and which are almost never sung (certainly not in the elementary school where I learned the song):

"As I went walking I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing.
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?"

@ai6yr If you've not seen it, the pure joy on Pete Seeger's face as he leads the unexpurgated version of that song at the Obama inauguration will brighten your spirit,. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnvCPQqQWds

I saw Pete live in Santiago, Chile in 1988, during the death throes of the Pinochet dictatorship. Víctor Jara, a folksinger and national hero brutally killed by the dictatorship in 1973, had translated “If I Had a Hammer” into Spanish, modifying the tune somewhat to fit the new lyrical pattern.

People were pumped to see Pete, expecting Jara to return from the dead. When he sang the original version, in English, they booed him.

It was awful.

@adaitsman @ai6yr Oh, that's sad.

It really was. I grew up on Pete and it was hard for me to sit through. I always wondered about his reaction to it.
