Nina Power of Compact gets called a Nazi. Sues for defamation. In discovery, produces chats not just supporting Nazi ideas but calling herself a Nazi. Loses so hard she just declared bankruptcy. https://luketurner.com/Nina_Power/

the TERF to Nazi pipeline is a doorway, or just walking across the same room

Nina Power

Nina Power has lost the High Court libel claim that she and Daniel 'DC' Miller brought against me. In the ruling, the judge described their conduct as an aggressive course of bullying with the whiff of threat and antisemitism

@davidgerard "alien and fairy races". these persons live in a psychotic LARP. evokes my medical curiosity.
@lritter @davidgerard the... smugness? with which they compare their notes on coming up with their weird theories, reading other's theories, etc. is just weird

@kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard

No lie, I had to scroll past a bit because I was having flashbacks to the days of my youth when 4c* wasn't quite as well established as the cesspool of the internet.

If you've never been exposed, I certainly don't suggest you delve, but the energy shown there is a 1:1 match.

@theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard

I thought 4chan was established as a cesspool from birth, it's origin was "people who got banned from Something Awful because they were too vile", which I mean, considering the mid-late 2000s forums culture, is quite an achievement

@alexandria @theogrin @[email protected] @davidgerard it was 70% gore pornography back then, but for a while they were also the safest place to get rare music after someone figured out that the image upload system somehow also accepted zip files embedded in images

@alexandria @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

moot couldn’t post the things he wanted to post in the Anime subforum so he made his own site where he could make the rules. That should tell you all you need to know about what he was/is into.

SA Forums post paywall was the pinnacle of the type of heavy handed moderation needed for social media.

@bflipp @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

As one of the many queer posters on modern SA Forums, I disagree about the post paywall. That's a critical and very positive part of moderation because it means that, if you make a post that is bad enough to get banned, the moderators are actually encouraged to ban you for it. Compare with, for example, Reddit, where making accounts is easy and therefore bans mean absolutely nothing, lmao

@alexandria @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

Sounds like you're in agreement with Brett -- that the paywall is necessary and exceedingly helpful in the moderation of one of the internet's oldest extant forums, let alone one with such a storied history, and that 'heavy-handed' moderation is the way to go in such cases. At least, that's how I'm reading that.

I'm also definitely not arguing that 4c was always a cesspool -- just that it hadn't been entirely recognized as such in the early days.

@theogrin @alexandria @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid it's one of the better ideas Lowtax ever stumbled over. Works well at Metafilter too. Mind you, both sites basically have an aging audience of old timers and not so many new users joining.

@lritter @davidgerard @theogrin @alexandria @kitten_tech @paninid

The healthiest thing for the internet is for sites/platforms to die so new ones can take their place.

@lritter @bflipp @davidgerard @theogrin @alexandria @paninid I like variety! We need variety. And things like ActivityPub so the diverse things can interlink nicely 👍
@davidgerard @theogrin @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid Eh, I dunno. For context I joined the Something Awful Forums in around 2020 after lurking for a long while and like, the aging has been noticably good for the site. There's a metric ton of queer folk, I've seen very blatant bad-faith neoliberalism probated on sight, etc. and the megathread-based mode of communicating is honestly so much superior to sites like Reddit.
@alexandria @davidgerard @theogrin @bflipp @kitten_tech @paninid *turns around to audience* a resounding endorsement ladies and gentlemen and cognitives just in general. that means it's a go! EVERYBODY!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO SOMETHING AWFUL!

@alexandria @davidgerard @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid

That’s actually great to hear that the moderation has stayed somewhat consistent. I joined in 1999. The evolution through 2008ish when I stopped posting was dramatic.

I mean there was open file sharing and porn forums for a while though I basically only hung out in SHSC. Lowtax tolerated a lot of right leaning political stuff but even then openly racist/fascist/nazi shit was an instaban.

It definitely skewed middle class white male libertarian for most of my time there though but that’s mainly its roots coming out of the 90s online Quake community showing.

@davidgerard

We write words to the effect of 'scratch a TERF, find a Nazi', but ultimately, sometimes you just have to sit in the same room and wait for them to open their mouths, and a 'sieg hail' will spill right out.

Good on the High Court for their discovery and decision. The more of these bastards who get raked across the coals, the better.

@davidgerard

(reads website)

Fuck. my. old. boots.

Torygraph writer, offspring of a Spectator writer, offspring of some other part of The Establishment?

My loathing for these people is really quite expansive.

@JuliaRez i've been giggling all morning over this one

@davidgerard

I ... Can't. She'll get a column in the Torygraph, a speaking tour, and a book deal out of it. Where I'm sure we can look forward to an interview at Hay or Cheltenham with some other fellow traveller.

@JuliaRez @davidgerard It's fucking scary that this kind of person had this kind of career in the last 6 years. I did not know her before this, but her private messages and "anonymous" twitter account are deranged. I certainly didn't expect her to be seen as a "normal" right-wing journalist with a "serious" book publication in 2021
@johnny @JuliaRez @davidgerard she was a relatively famous left wing academic in 2014.
@catch56 @JuliaRez @davidgerard that's even crazier. is TERFdom enough of a brain cancer to turn you into a nazi within 4 years?
@johnny @JuliaRez @davidgerard TERFdom and Nazi boyfriend yes.

@johnny

"Gender critical" views are, fundamentally, regressive and built on a white supremacist foundation. It's not a huge leap from there to other related beliefs, even without far-right fellow travellers to help nudge you in that direction.

@catch56 @JuliaRez @davidgerard

@davidgerard what a nice person she is.....

surprised she declared bankruptcy rather than crowdfund from her many supporters....

@Thebratdragon my psychic powers tell me she has backers making sure she misses no meals
@davidgerard and is bankrupt as her assets mysteriously vanished offshore, just before she declared.
@davidgerard I guess her middle name is "white".
@davidgerard her appalling hateful beliefs aside, i do find it genuinely funny whenever someone does this specific legal maneuver (suing for defamation and then getting demolished by your own stuff in discovery). are they really so incompetent as to not realize what would happen? i guess they must be
@wehpudicabok @davidgerard I guess failing to sue would look like an admission; starting the process and hoping that the other party will settle (which they can claim “vindicates” them) rather than go through with it may seem like the best strategy?
@wehpudicabok @davidgerard yes. More precisely, they are convinced they are right. So how could anyone else not see it.
@wehpudicabok @davidgerard People like this aren’t known for making good decisions. There’s also a good chance she didn’t know how much info she’d have to turn over as part of discovery.
@davidgerard So people still know that beeing identified as a Nazi still is not seen as a socially accepted or desirable feature, even by Nazis. In a way i find that soothing. But the amount of cognitive ignorance these people manage to hold up for themselves to be able to look at themselves into the mirror is mindblowing.
Kathleen Stock (@Docstockk) on X

.@Nina_Compact is an original, stimulating, light-footed writer who always makes me think; I'm very happy I supported her crowdfunder a few years back; and I get a lot from @compactmag_ where she is editor, and the podcast she contributes to. Keep doing what you do Nina, you are

X (formerly Twitter)
@arnfinnp @davidgerard imagine writing that after all these messages came to light 😬
@arnfinnp @davidgerard oh boy. Not even trying to cover up their appreciation of an actual Nazi.
@davidgerard
I wonder if The Spectator and The Telegraph will continue to let a self-identified Nazi write for them.
@davidgerard sometimes it only means changing chairs
@davidgerard She lost a libel suit *in Britain*? Ouch.
@davidgerard i feel like i shouldn't be surprised by anything these fuckers do anymore but man those texts are WILD

@davidgerard

Yay. Fuck Nazis wherever they may be.

@davidgerard "you should not reveal this to most people" in response to "alien and fairy races" definitely deserves to enter into the shared lexicon
@jplebreton @davidgerard “You should not reveal this to most people” was pretty much the Scott Alexander / Slate Star Codex line, except his precise words were “I will appreciate if you NEVER TELL ANYONE I SAID THIS”.
@mathew @davidgerard ah yes, this was his infamous "my incredibly smart and rational brain has uncovered the truth that race science is real" - kind of the flip side of the same coin from power, deactivating your own moral gag reflex so your newly glowing galaxy brain can believe repellent pseudoscience
@davidgerard Chef's kiss & finger gesture
