Nina Power of Compact gets called a Nazi. Sues for defamation. In discovery, produces chats not just supporting Nazi ideas but calling herself a Nazi. Loses so hard she just declared bankruptcy. https://luketurner.com/Nina_Power/

the TERF to Nazi pipeline is a doorway, or just walking across the same room

Nina Power

Nina Power has lost the High Court libel claim that she and Daniel 'DC' Miller brought against me. In the ruling, the judge described their conduct as an aggressive course of bullying with the whiff of threat and antisemitism

@davidgerard "alien and fairy races". these persons live in a psychotic LARP. evokes my medical curiosity.
@lritter @davidgerard the... smugness? with which they compare their notes on coming up with their weird theories, reading other's theories, etc. is just weird

@kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard

No lie, I had to scroll past a bit because I was having flashbacks to the days of my youth when 4c* wasn't quite as well established as the cesspool of the internet.

If you've never been exposed, I certainly don't suggest you delve, but the energy shown there is a 1:1 match.

@theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard

I thought 4chan was established as a cesspool from birth, it's origin was "people who got banned from Something Awful because they were too vile", which I mean, considering the mid-late 2000s forums culture, is quite an achievement

@alexandria @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

moot couldn’t post the things he wanted to post in the Anime subforum so he made his own site where he could make the rules. That should tell you all you need to know about what he was/is into.

SA Forums post paywall was the pinnacle of the type of heavy handed moderation needed for social media.

@bflipp @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

As one of the many queer posters on modern SA Forums, I disagree about the post paywall. That's a critical and very positive part of moderation because it means that, if you make a post that is bad enough to get banned, the moderators are actually encouraged to ban you for it. Compare with, for example, Reddit, where making accounts is easy and therefore bans mean absolutely nothing, lmao

@alexandria @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @davidgerard @paninid

Sounds like you're in agreement with Brett -- that the paywall is necessary and exceedingly helpful in the moderation of one of the internet's oldest extant forums, let alone one with such a storied history, and that 'heavy-handed' moderation is the way to go in such cases. At least, that's how I'm reading that.

I'm also definitely not arguing that 4c was always a cesspool -- just that it hadn't been entirely recognized as such in the early days.

@theogrin @alexandria @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid it's one of the better ideas Lowtax ever stumbled over. Works well at Metafilter too. Mind you, both sites basically have an aging audience of old timers and not so many new users joining.

@lritter @davidgerard @theogrin @alexandria @kitten_tech @paninid

The healthiest thing for the internet is for sites/platforms to die so new ones can take their place.

@lritter @bflipp @davidgerard @theogrin @alexandria @paninid I like variety! We need variety. And things like ActivityPub so the diverse things can interlink nicely 👍
@davidgerard @theogrin @bflipp @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid Eh, I dunno. For context I joined the Something Awful Forums in around 2020 after lurking for a long while and like, the aging has been noticably good for the site. There's a metric ton of queer folk, I've seen very blatant bad-faith neoliberalism probated on sight, etc. and the megathread-based mode of communicating is honestly so much superior to sites like Reddit.
@alexandria @davidgerard @theogrin @bflipp @kitten_tech @paninid *turns around to audience* a resounding endorsement ladies and gentlemen and cognitives just in general. that means it's a go! EVERYBODY!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO SOMETHING AWFUL!

@alexandria @davidgerard @theogrin @kitten_tech @lritter @paninid

That’s actually great to hear that the moderation has stayed somewhat consistent. I joined in 1999. The evolution through 2008ish when I stopped posting was dramatic.

I mean there was open file sharing and porn forums for a while though I basically only hung out in SHSC. Lowtax tolerated a lot of right leaning political stuff but even then openly racist/fascist/nazi shit was an instaban.

It definitely skewed middle class white male libertarian for most of my time there though but that’s mainly its roots coming out of the 90s online Quake community showing.
