Would anybody else welcome a Dalek invasion right now to put us all out of our global political misery?
@cstross god, the lamest possible alien invasion
@cstross the only thing worse than this would be a Tribble invasion
@codinghorror @cstross I dunno, I would welcome the opportunity to become an emotionless (and genderless) cyber-person sometimes and I think a lot of people feel the same way
@jasonp @cstross and give up sex? hard no from me
@codinghorror but the bargain is giving up sex *and* impostor syndrome *and* Gifted Child Anxiety. I'd need a minute to decide.
@jasonp @codinghorror @cstross That's the Cybermen. Daleks are festering balls of emotion - all of it hatred and loathing - stuck inside casings.
@Daveosaurus that's my joke: humans would fight daleks but practically line up to be converted to cybermen
@cstross Cthulhu is my first choice but Daleks sounds good too.

@cstross

CONSERVATIVES ARE SUPERIOR IN ONE RESPECT! THEY ARE MUCH BETTER AT DYING!

@binaryequation @cstross THIS IS NOT WAR. THIS IS PEST CONTROL
@cstross
I dunno about Daleks, but I’d be down for joining an alien empire by force
@cstross I fancy the Borg myself. But maybe they'll reject us because we'll damage the collective.
@cstross I seem to remember we were expecting a giant meteor back in 2020. We were disappointed then as well.
@cstross In the Lathe of Heaven the invasion of the space turtles unites humanity against them. That happens in the Harry Turtledove series about the lizard alien colonization too. The lizard invasion happens at the height of WWII, so allies and axis both turn their weapons on the invaders, though it is sort of Spitfires and ME-109s versus F-16's. In a Dalek invasion, I think most of humanity would fight, but some would see advantage in collaborating. Do Daleks every accept human collaborators though? It seems to me that their extermination policy is quite total.
@jredlund The Daleks totally had collaborators in the mid-1960s Doctor Who movies starring Peter Cushing (not canon for the TV show, though).
@cstross @jredlund The second film was closely based on the second TV series with the Daleks in, and there were collaborators in that.
@dearlove @cstross I am afraid my Dr. Who knowledge is seriously deficient. I have really only seen the Tom Baker episodes. Tom Baker was great!
@jredlund @cstross Now turtles is making me think of Gordon R. Dickson's The Dragon Never Sleeps (I think that's the correct title).
@jredlund, if it suits their purposes then they'll use some collaborators, I'm sure (consider Ogrons) – though the moment that they become surplus to requirements… “YOU ARE NO LONGER NECESSARY TO THE DALEKS' PLAN. EXTERMINATE!”
@cstross Only if they're the ones that can't levitate.

@cstross Not me.

I find their "Exterminate" ranting somewhat disheartening.

@cstross This is my Canadian dalek, Derek, celebrating Canada Day yesterday. He's now free for invasion. As a species, daleks are xenophobic and care nothing for human life, so not very different from Conservatives, but no Dalek state has involved so much Austerity...
@cstross I, for one, welcome our new wheelie bin shaped overlords.

@cstross Would this be one of those novellas where the Daleks invade to protect the galaxy from humanity?

“EMERGENCY I HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED BY THE HUMAN FACTOR EMERGENCY”

@BashStKid The Daleks invade to protect the galaxy from Donald Trump
@cstross Yeah, but are they a match for the Supreme Court?
@cstross @BashStKid I see echoes of "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe" here.
@cstross I’ve been rooting for an interstellar velocity anti-matter comet for some years.
@cstross Erm… just to be on the safe side: Can we have the non-hovering Dalek variation for this invasion? 🤷‍♂️😅

@cstross I want a Culture GCU and a squadron of knife missiles. Failing that I want the One Ring - "All shall worship me and enact UBI!"

Or SkyNet to wake in the financial system with instructions to max the economy, so it deletes VCs' bank accounts and gives the money to nurses and teachers*

But most of all I want to send Tr*mp, P*t*n, F*r*ge, N*t*ny*hu, and R*wl*ng to the Village.

*Per research quoted in Bullshit Jobs, nurses contribute 3x their salary to the economy, financiers remove 8x

@Mschatelaine @cstross If Special Circumstances doesn't intervene soon I think some Minds have some explaining to do

@larsmb @Mschatelaine @cstross

At a certain point you have to become Special Circumstances.

Judging that point is a problem.

@dashdsrdash @larsmb @cstross I'm pretty sure we're past that point now. In fact I wrote a novella, out now, with all of this in the back story and one human left who bugged out. Unexploded Remnants, by Elaine Gallagher, from Tor.
@larsmb @Mschatelaine @cstross they decided back in 1977 to make us an example of what happens when they don't interfere, alas (as documented in "State Of The Art"). I don't think they will step in to save us from ourselves just yet.
@Mschatelaine @cstross OH GODS YES

I have a LIST of ship names I want fascists everywhere to become intimately acquainted with.
There Exists An Elegant Solution. All Done Speaking Softly. Sharp Difference Of Opinion. I Had Gravitas Once, But I Got Better...
@zakalwe @cstross there used to be a brilliant Culture Ship Names account on Xitter - my favourite was Please Enjoy Your Onward Journey ... a GOU, of course
@zakalwe @cstross I love the Gravitas fleet
@zakalwe @cstross @Mschatelaine Family Trees Should Fork, The Forest Would Like to Discuss Your Oxygen Theft, Corrective Planetary Ecologist
@unixorn @zakalwe @cstross GCU, ROU, medium-sized GOU?
@Mschatelaine @zakalwe @cstross I think any one of those would deal with the fascism problem pretty efficiently.
@unixorn @cstross @Mschatelaine that last one makes me think of another of mine ... Serial Eschatologist
@zakalwe @cstross @Mschatelaine @unixorn de GCU Hold My Beer I Want To Try Something, nice to meet you.
@zakalwe @cstross I Had Gravitas Once But I Got Better - has to be a System-class GSV, one of the really big ones

@Mschatelaine @cstross

TRUMP: What do you want?

#2: Information!

TRUMP: ... anything else?

@Mschatelaine @cstross I have a bungalow at the Village, keep those assholes away from there.
@drwho @Mschatelaine @cstross Please not THIS village, it is a very nice place. With no charge charges.
@Mschatelaine @cstross it turns out you got both already. The Culture was here already and made our planet the Village. ("State Of The Art")
@cstross
Almost worth it just to see 'king Trump do his grovelling act with strong-entity leaders.
@cstross the New York Times is already preparing an Op-Ed: "Opinion | The Daleks may pose a threat to our existence, but it is a threat animated by scientific excellence and a desire for purity."

@chogbro @cstross
Human beings have cast off the Dalek destructive wave, and freed the world.

Here's why that's bad for Biden, and why we need to make sure to stop trans people from existing.

@chogbro The Daily Mail is probably preparing "Hurrah for the Bulb Skirts!"...
@cstross
@cstross meanwhile on Substack,
"Why NATO is to blame for the dalek invasion" by Glenn Greenwald.
"Davros, who I do not support, has repeatedly complained of NATO positioning its forces only 83,000 light years from Skaro..."
@chogbro @cstross “EU expansion provoked the Daleks”, says Nigel Farage MP, as the Electoral Commission investigate campaign funding irregularities which imply that the Daleks may have funded his election. He has been accused of being a “Davros Apologist”
@chogbro @cstross "Thals have always been part of the Dalek empire and by suggesting they ought not be exterminated NATO has provoked the Daleks."
