This pains me no end after a lifetime of subscribing, but the @nytimes has lost its way at a time when the need for exemplary journalism is at its greatest.
@petergleick All NYT did was asking for a candidate with an above zero chance to defeat Trump and stop him from destroying US democracy. You are shooting the messenger here.

@christianschwaegerl @petergleick See there's really two possibilities here:

1) the NYT editorial board are political neophytes and have no idea how political campaigns are run nor how candidates are selected.

or

2) the NYT wants Trump to win.

Take your pick.

@tob @petergleick Both options are wrong. The public was lied to about Biden’s state by his entourage. People (and the NYT Editorial Board) gave Biden the benefit of doubt. Then, in the first unscripted confrontation, he falls apart, fails at exposing Trump and comes across as weak and confused. These images now define him. Dem’s choice simply is to either find a new candidate or hand over the keys to the White House to Trump. NYT’s article is nothing less than a distress call.

@christianschwaegerl @petergleick "These images now define him?"

Only in your fantasies.

No one watched the debate except partisans and wonks.

IMO, the only lasting effect of Thursday's pointless farce is that the bar is now set incredibly low for Biden.

Of course Biden will not drop out. He will win the nomination. The Dem convention will be a joyous celebration of Biden/Harris. Capped off with a great speech by the nominee.

The NYT Ed. Board will give him their full-throated endorsement.

@christianschwaegerl @petergleick It's all so stupid. The NYT Ed Board pretending that anything that happened during the debate mattered *AND* also pretending that their opinion matters for anything.

Biden is going to ignore them. Just as Trump already does.

America's political press can no longer claim to have any relevance.

They could matter. The 4th estate has incredible power in a democracy. But they long ago chose to play the kayfabe referee.

@tob @petergleick I always thought it’s Maga people who live in a DIY alternative reality. Hard to argue with your wishful thinking. This has been broadcast allover the world and is a leading topic in Europe. Offering an ailing man with (totally normal but steep) age-related decline to lead in times of crisis is akin to a suicide mission. Biden’s problems can only get worse. Proposing he steers the West at an age when children try to convince their parents to stop driving cars is simply crazy.

@christianschwaegerl @petergleick Everyone's problems can only get worse. He's "steering the West" now.

Are you calling for him to resign the Presidency?

@tob @petergleick I’m calling for nothing but live in a part of the world that heavily depends on what happens in the US. If Trump wins, rise of global far-right will continue, climate goals become unreachable and much more. So I hope for candidate who can defeat Trump. That candidate is 100% not Joe Biden. He deserves a lot of respect. But there’s a time for every leader to hand over power – but please to one of the many capable Democratic politicians. If it’s Trump, Biden’s legacy will implode

@christianschwaegerl @petergleick since you don't live in America, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just tell you that you are wrong to say (As you have said repeatedly) that Biden can't beat Trump.

Biden is very well positioned to win in November. Which is 3 months from now.

Take a deep breath. Look at a calendar. Pace yourself.

@tob @petergleick I’ll bookmark this, let’s talk again after election day.
@christianschwaegerl @petergleick lol. So I suppose I'll only hear from you if your 50-50 bet turns out right.
@tob @petergleick No, I’ve put it in my calendar. If Biden wins, we can rejoice. If Trump wins, it will be your fault.
