This is an EPIC rant and EVERY WORD OF IT IS TRUE. Seriously, set aside half an hour to read it! (Caution: contains expletives and LLMs.)

Great news everyone! I finally talk about AI hype. Someone finally mentioned LLMs one time too many, and the reckoning is upon us: https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-fucking-piledrive-you-if-you-mention-ai-again/

@cstross me: no way I have that much time.
Okay, let's just click.

10 min later: aww this is so hilariously angry, yet true 😂

@cstross My theory is that tech is going through a significant post-COVID downsizing right now and AI hype is a somewhat desperate attempt to keep the cash rolling in.

@kevinjardine @cstross I think it's partly driven by the cryptocrash. The grifters need new snake oil & LLMs fit the bill. GPU manufacturers need to sell their expensive chips, so compute-intensive "AI" is an ideal use case, now crypto's not so shiny.

Tech "visionaries" & their corporate (stochastic) parrots also need a new angle, now enshittification is killing all the useful stuff.

Meanwhile a few folk still make a living from their own work without plagiarism, & we can't have that, can we?

@cstross

Absolute truth, all of this.

Including the chiropractic adjustments.

@cstross
This line about grifters is <chef's kiss>:
"... it turns out that the core competency of smiling and promising people things that you can't actually deliver is highly transferable."
@JohnLAlford My first manager was not liked by the higher-ups in the company because he would say "We can't do that" when we couldn't deliver the thing.
@HollieK72
Please tell me your first manager is still out there delivering doses of much-needed reality
@JohnLAlford I honestly hope so. Unfortunately he left the company before I did, largely because he talked about reality.

If your tastes run to (slightly) less profanity and (much) more academic peer review, then we got you covered:

ChatGPT is bullshit - Ethics and Information Technology

Recently, there has been considerable interest in large language models: machine learning systems which produce human-like text and dialogue. Applications of these systems have been plagued by persistent inaccuracies in their output; these are often called “AI hallucinations”. We argue that these falsehoods, and the overall activity of large language models, is better understood as bullshit in the sense explored by Frankfurt (On Bullshit, Princeton, 2005): the models are in an important way indifferent to the truth of their outputs. We distinguish two ways in which the models can be said to be bullshitters, and argue that they clearly meet at least one of these definitions. We further argue that describing AI misrepresentations as bullshit is both a more useful and more accurate way of predicting and discussing the behaviour of these systems.

@cstross I want to love this blog but to be honest I appreciate the passion and I don't care about profanity but the ultra-violent imagery turns me off. That said, it is very interesting to hear the little boy exposing the Emperor's New Clothes
@cstross thanks for making this appear in my feed 👍 nice to see someone else ranting about the same things I rant about internally 😂 I did my undergrad thesis on using machine learning techniques in human activity recognition (over a decade ago). We had some clever things going on then, and put hard graft in, but none of it was truly ready for the masses and ML still isn't, but the genie is out of the bottle and some people are determined to make it work, like crypto currencies all over...
