@MikeDunnAuthor how do people put up paying $1,5k p.m. just for a tiny room to sleep in?
If that would be charged in #Germany, you'd see riots if not a civil war and landlords being lynched in public...
@match @MikeDunnAuthor considering the fact that people in the USA have actual means to defend themselves [#2A] I wounder if people are just too busy or frightened cuz the fact that there isn't an uprising is concerning...
It's kinda frightening and fascinating cuz if anyone were to import even half of that from the #USA to the #EU, people would riot till politicians fully undo that shit and deliver further concessions...
@kkarhan @MikeDunnAuthor It's a bit more insidious than that: There is a right to verbal, non-disruptive protests, and a right to own guns under the explicit pretext that they can be used for violent protest. However, any rational person would escalate to _destruction of property_ as a means of protest, which is not only unprotected but absolutely verboten in America and massively policed with extremely militarized responses: tanks, helicopters, tear gas.
The middle-ground between purely non-disruptive protest and lethal violence is cut out intentionally, because any good-faith objector would want to escalate gradually and find themselves stymied at approximately the Black Lives Matter stage.
@match @MikeDunnAuthor And that's the problem...
I'm shure once society in the USA hits the breaking point, where the french would go out on the street, make some fires and shout "listen to or or we will fuck up things!" the people will just skip that "Fuck Around And Find Out!" stage and just start returning fire...
It's just that people in the USA never had to actually force things to be changed without it escalating to a civil war...
@match @kkarhan @MikeDunnAuthor
Also, the kind of people who usually lead the charge have been subverted by propaganda to think their oligarch overlords aren't the enemy, it's the people saying "hey, we can do better."
It also doesn't help that everyone is almost broke all of the time. You can't protest if missing a day of work will get you evicted.
@MikeDunnAuthor @jarek not exactly. - 1 room apartments are usually single room studios, not two dedicaded rooms!
Also it's not as absurd as in the #USA where in 0 counties a person can afford a two-room apartment with federal minimum wage and in 95% not even a single one. (and yes, that's county, it would be unreasonable to go by ZIP codes cuz OFC Munich and Frankfurt at Main at their inner center will be absurdly expensive...
That being said, If big real estate corporations like #VONOVIA had it their way, they'd gladly charge people β¬2k for a mouldy shitbox!
I've seen so many videos shot by landlords that are proud of their offering when it's a 35mΒ² 5th floor walk up that is asking "only $3800 per month" in a dodgy area of Manhattan.
For a country that prides itself on innovation and problem solving, there's a lot of shrugging and saying "well, what can you do?"
@the5thColumnist @MikeDunnAuthor
Statistical realities...
@MikeDunnAuthor lol I have NEVER made more than 22k a year.
I now make 960 a year because I'm disabled and can't get work, and SSDI is like pulling compacted wisdom teeth without anesthesia and only using a dental pick.
