Hmmm

This train to Pécs isn’t great

Between Sárbogárd and Dombóvár it’s single track and quite slow and bumpy. The modern IC+ carriage has nice seats but lots of things rattle. I’d somehow sooner have a real branch line train than this quasi InterCity!

Bit of confusion though - seems this might go only to Magyarbóly and I need a bus across the border… we’ll see (I’ve worked out a way by bike if I need it!)

Pécs-Külváros

Pretty sure no one got on or off here. Cool font though

Pécsbánya-Rendező

A hive of activity. But trees obscure the building

Train manager comes by. Typical Central European rail dude. I speak no Hungarian, he speaks no English, he scans my pass and all is cool 😎
More than 80km/h on a Bzmot? This is exciting. And bumpy.

Pécsudvard

More bus shelter than train station. A couple get on. The Bzmot’s engine scares a cat

Szőkéd

Brutalist station has seen better days. A dude with funky sunglasses gets on

Áta

A neat station building. A second track. But no people.

Kistótfalu

The tiny station was on the other side. So here’s what was on my side

Vokány

Palkonya

Neatly painted hut

Villánykövesd

An even better painted hut

Villány

This is where everyone was going. There’s even freight

Magyarbóly

So yes the train did end here today. Then it’s a bus across the border… But it’s waiting.

#CrossBorderRail unexpected bus

Magyarbóly - Beli Manastir

This is border 211
Beli Manastir 🇭🇷 - Magyarbóly 🇭🇺

Road borders around here are few. So the bus has to make a large detour - green line. Red is the train route.
#Schengen works here 🙂 No stop and no police at the border

These Macosa DMUs in Croatia might look ok outside, but they’re *grim*

The motors are insanely loud

Some have air con - a little less loud, but the air is very bad. This one doesn’t - air is better, but noise is deafening

Pro tip: the very front is the quietest there is. Still not great, but passable!

Overall though the infra here is better than I’d expected - on the whole Pécs - Beli Manastir - Osijek route

Replace the Macosa DMU with something better and run some fewer stops InterRegio trains and this would be pretty good

The reason I had a bus was some engineering works - so totally legitimate

Osijek

Croatia’s 4th city

And *nothing* happening at its station!

Ah. My train is a… bus

So that was an effing mess

Typical HŽPP

I went towards what I thought was my train (the only train there was) and asked. It wasn’t my train because my train was replaced by a bus between Osijek and Đurđenovac

And then the HŽPP guy got annoyed by my Interrail pass in a bus so cramped my knees are crushed in

Another passenger told me the reason: “emergency track maintenance” 🤷‍♂️

And really the zeal with which this HŽPP guy is checking tickets on this bus is quite something.

Generally when DB runs a Schienenersatzverkehr bus they don’t check tickets, a sort of “we know this is inconvenient, we’ll leave you in peace”. But not here.

A train! And it’ll run! 🤯

And I even have a half cold #BeerOnTrains

Personen im Gleis! ‼️

Ah no. It’s Croatia. It’s normal…

Zdenci-Orahovica

One passenger alights. An elderly gentleman sits on a bench and observes. And on we go

Čačinci

A more modern building. Next to a massive silo. This was once more important than today. 2 get on, 1 off

This Končar built DMU (built 2019) has two roof mounted diesel engines. But the part where all the seats are is below these engines. The middle car without engine is the PRM toilet and multi use area…

The noise level is ok, but I have been in better

https://www.railwaygazette.com/traction-and-rolling-stock/konar-kev-dmu-enters-service/42090.article

Končar KEV DMU enters service

CROATIA: Passenger operator HŽ PP's first Končar KEV Class 7023 diesel multiple-unit entered revenue service on February 15, operating on the route between Zagreb, Varaždin and Kotoriba. The three-car articulated DMU is 58·5 m long. It has 151 fixed and nine folding seats, two wheelchair spaces, space for two ...

Railway Gazette International

Slatina

A more substantial place. Half a dozen board, 1 gets off

😢

Cabuna

No one gets on or off. It’s a charming little station with an impeccably dressed HŽPP employee there

This train is painfully slow

And peculiar

Normally when a train is doing barely 50km/h, the reason is obvious - the track is very bad

But we’re on smooth-ish welded track here. 80km/h ought to be doable!

Ich denke oft an Piroschka (Film) – Wikipedia

@jon These are worryingly narrow platforms
@bwh Old Austro Hungarian style!
@jon I could be that gentleman in ten years.
@tml @jon Let’s buy this station building and make it a bit prettier to sit there! Very quaint
@kupfers @tml and meanwhile campaign for better trains 🙂
@jon “orah” means walnut. I wonder what the forests look like around here.
@jon Admittedly, I've been that person sometimes 😅 (in Slovenia - would absolutely never try it in Italy!)
Since getting to the mall behind Nova Gorica station "legally" requires a lengthy detour by foot. This will be fixed once the station upgrade works are finished, since they're planning to build a cycle underpass below the tracks
@samuele963 oh I’ve been that person too 🙂

@jon I've technically also done it in Italy once, but it was during a photoshoot after a heritage train ride (to Osoppo) so it doesn't really count!

This part of the line is only used by heritage trains (+ some freight) for now, though there are plans to reopen it to regular passenger traffic

@jon
Wonderful result - finally
@jon Based on a few samples, the same for Trenitalia and ČD. I wouldn’t bet on Renfe, though.
@tml Renfe would demand ID from you to get on the bus!

@tml @jon Yeah, no ticket checks on the replacement buses I've taken (1x Trenitalia, 1x SŽ, 2-3x FUC)

The FUC line buses are timetabled (so they aren't really replacement buses), so if you wanted to dodge the fare you could totally rely on taking them rather than the train

@jon once during a long term closure between pardubice and hradec, czech railways were checking tickets for the replacement bus before boarding the bus

with their stupid handhelds that don't use a camera but some infrared bullshit to scan the code

which doesn't work in direct sunlight really

outside of the bus
@jon I was super surprised in Belfast, after the Springsteen concert, folks where going back from the venue to the Belfast city centre by train, so you can imagine how many folks... well there were many agents present to sell tickets and check tickets of every single person. At 23:30 in the night.
@julienw Northern Irish Rail is among the most obsessive about ticket checks I’ve ever seen. The Brits are quite extreme but Northern Ireland one level more

@jon but you could buy it right before the check (both when we arrived before the concert or when we left after it), this worked not too bad in the end. And the agents were also controlling how many folks could enter the station at once.

In France in Stade de France, the doors are fully open, nobody checks tickets, but it's chaos. And if you get checked later in your journey you'd get a fine...

@jon To be fair, not much happens at any of Croatia's stations. ;)
@timrichards @jon The hzpp.hr website seemed incapable of producing a time for Zagreb - Split, just now.
Perhaps it’s a “not every day” service, where you have to be clairvoyant about what day to select.
And phone them if you want to know if a train is on time, seemingly.
@vandyke4ad @jon That's a disappointing train too, modern but far too small and uncomfortable for such a long ride.
@jon Oooofffff and zero electrification either
@jon
Nevertheless, a very nice modernised station building. In terms of city planning, an interesting city to explore. A lot of green areas, lot of bike lanes in the context of the whole country.
@jon
No ramp. On my trip three days ago, a person with wheelchair boarded. Everybody helped lifting.
@jon
These really do look very desolate.
@jon a sharrow at the very right part of the lane?

Are you sure you're not in some post soviet cosplay environment today? All your photos have serious "Good Bye, Lenin!" vibes.

@jon

@jon
Agricultural places. This is the Nebraska of Hungary it seems.
@jon
... or Croatia. I'm not sure where this is.
@Island_Martha I’m now in Croatia yes. Osijek - Koprivnica - Zagreb route
@jon
Thank you. My knowledge of Eastern European place names is minus zero.
I'm really quite in awe of this accomplishment. Yesterday - YESTERDAY ONLY! - you were in Vilnius, Lithuania - tonight you are in Zagreb, Croatia. WOW!!!
@Island_Martha oh these are tiny places I’m writing about. Even most Croatians wouldn’t know where these were! But yes, the Warszawa - Budapest night train got me a long way!
