why is it that only some farts smell like poo? it would make sense for all farts to smell like poo or for no farts to smell like poo but there must be a reason why most farts smell like farts while the occasional one smells like poo
I love you fedi, absolutely everyone has given a different suggestion based on pure guesses and vibes
@stavvers might check out infofart.com
@stavvers Guesses and vibes are now the official names of farts that smell like poo and farts that smell like farts.
@stavvers This question is best contemplated on the Glasgow Subway.
@pigworker been on the buckfast tonight which might be why it's in my mind
@stavvers No fart has ever left the Glasgow Subway. It's the place to do the experiment.

@stavvers I always assumed it was indicative of how close you are to needing to go to the loo 😅(poo-ier ones happen closer to poo-time)

something something gas flows through colon, aerates some poo on the way out if it passes by?

I may just be talking out of my bum though 😄

@Foritus @stavvers

This sounds like the most reasonable explanation actually.

I mean, the furthest form of poo smelling fart would be the shart, which comes from misjudging gas pressure and its disloging ability -- any further and you're just straight up shitting your pants.

@psychoalpastor @Foritus it feels plausible and yet I have done poo-smelling farts when a dump was nowhere near, and sharts which smelled of farts. Further research is required
@stavvers @psychoalpastor I'll get the pak-choi on the go, for science 😅
@stavvers My guess guess is that it depends on how solid the solids in the colon are, but must admit my research is lacking 😔
@stavvers I guess that depend on the gases. If the poo is to... thick I guess that is more difficult to be scattered in the gas, but if the poo (or part of it) is more liquid maybe some part of it can be mix in the gas and hence in the gas so we can smell it?
@stavvers Aerosols vs. gasses, I guess

@katow @stavvers

Every fart aerosolizes feces, that's what we won't or can't face.

Talking about faces... no, let's go to DM for that.

@stavvers depends on what the bacteria are doing.
@stavvers gut chemistry is an ongoing battle of fuel (the food being digested), your intestine directly acting upon that fuel, your gut microbiome interacting with the fuel and all three of those in a very active bidirectional feedback loop
@stavvers There's all kinds of ways for your poo to smell. Infinite combinations of food and intestinal mood.

@stavvers there is more than just faeces in your intestinal tract.

There's a whole ecosystem of organisms that produce gas as a byproduct of helping you digest food.

The gas they produce changes depending on what you feed them.

@stavvers this is a great question for an LLM chatbot. Its answer will, somehow, smell like poo.
@stavvers Ok, @Jackobli asked me to weigh in, so here I go.
The classic 'farty' smell are sulfur compounds, e.g. H2S. The fecal smell is mainly skatol, an amino compound. Both are derived from amino acid metabolism. That means, you produce more of both if you eat protein-rich food like meat.
Since H2S is more volatile and more noticeable (so most farts smell like farts), I think the actual smell depends a lot on circumstances and microbiome influence on sulfur.
