Accidental Tech Podcast: ATP Neutral: Car Shopping

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm if this doesn’t end with Casey accidentally buying a new car, I’m going to be very disappointed.
@stuart @atpfm
But will it be white or yellow?
@atpfm fantastic! The neutrals are some of the best segments. I know the listener survey pointed to tech topics but I love the non-tech specials.
@atpfm Yes! Been hoping for this for a while.
@atpfm This is better than Apple bringing back the AirPort Extreme

@atpfm @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment stick makes sense when there's snow and ice, but electric with regenerative brakes is close.

4Runner is great, I drove like 1000 miles in South America on it.

@atpfm just saw the show notes, and holy shit yes, this is going to be a great episode, can’t wait to listen!
@atpfm I didn’t look at the show notes but I am in the market for a new car. I hope one of the scenarios collides with my needs.

@atpfm
If I understand this correctly. I need to love listening to ATP so much, that I subscribe in order to listen to an entirely different podcast that wasn’t even accidental…

This was a @caseyliss idea wasn’t it.

@atpfm Now what will it take for the next special to send the 3 of you in these cars on wild adventures?
@TheSilentDawn A shitload more patron subscriptions
@atpfm As the episode progressed I was hoping a category would be “What car you coveted from your formative years, no longer made, fully restored, unlimited budget?”
@atpfm Not gonna lie, @caseyliss nailed it with the RS6 Avant (that GT 😍), not in the least because it lets you smugly refer to your car as a "shooting brake" and enjoy the confusion on people's faces. Team Wagon 4 life!
@bruienne @atpfm @caseyliss RS6 Avant's not a shooting brake because it has 4 doors. English (British) terminology is Estate.
@atpfm auuuugh how many ways can @siracusa be wrong??
“The $168k base price electric G-wagen is basically the same price as an R1S.”
“The insane luxury G-wagen is too rough, like a Wrangler”. Holy hell, the Jeep wrangler is one of the most dumpster fire awful-driving road vehicles I’ve ever set foot in.
“You’ve gotta buy a used Lucid Air to get anywhere near $70k” (base price of a new BASE one is $69,900)
At least we agree on how awesome the Mazda6 drives.
@rconti I did say I didn’t actually know the G’s price. And the base Air recently got a price drop.
@atpfm I just completed my first-ever run of all of the 13 Neutral episodes and I see *this* on my feed?! Incredible.
@atpfm oh no @marcoarment - re: BMW iX. It is absolutely terrible. Yes, modern BMWs are hideous. But they generally drive great. I’m on my third BMW. Just test drove an i4. Drives great, electronics aside. I love the i3. Almost bought one. The iX is atrocious. Bad, bad, awful driving dynamics. Seats are flat as a board. Whole vehicle pitches and rolls like it’s in 10 foot waves. It’ll make you seasick. Simply terrible to drive. Honestly, go try one. Laughably bad.
@atpfm re Porsche: no, not the 911. Boxster/Cayman. Spyder or GTS 4.0 if you want something with suspension. Looks better, engine in the right place. Just bought a Boxster S and it truly is better in every way than my Motorsport BMWs have been. I’m a believer. It takes only a little time to realize every single part is simply better than on a BMW.
And manual, not PDK. I turo’d a PDK car and didn’t really fall in love with the platform until I bought my manual. The tactile sensation of those better quality Porsche parts shines with the manual.
@atpfm Sigh. Fuck it. You got me. I'm in.
@atpfm What about a Toyota GR? @siracusa I know it’s not a 4 door, but I believe they are ~$35k and you can get it with a manual tranny.
@atpfm @siracusa Nearing the end of the episode…I understand you needed enough room for the kiddos. Do they still sell the Subaru WRX (not STI) with a manual tranny?
@leemoknows Maybe, but that’d be a smaller back seat for sure.
@siracusa You have a point. I didn’t realize the WRX was in the ‘Performance’ category lol. That changes everything.
@leemoknows @siracusa the WRX lost its soul in the latest generation, maybe even in the last... they're so middle of the pack
@karanj That’s a shame. 😐 Seems like other models out there with a long history are following this trend.
@atpfm Thanks for the fun episode! I was recently in a “my kid will be driving in a few years and I need a car that I can drive and live with until I pass it down”. Ended up with a Crosstrek which should be a good learner car. Wanted a CRV or Rav4 but they’re too expensive now.
@atpfm a dad in my daughters scout troop had an EV6 and loved it. Big tires on that compact SUV. Currently my wife drives a Venue and I drive a 2015 Caravan that I’ll do my best to never give up. They don’t make them anymore and I really like it. The Venue isn’t bad but it’s just a tad small and the way the seats are I’ll feel so small. It’s a good commuter though. Our next new car will most likely be electric.
@atpfm oh a great show too!
@atpfm so I was listening to this, driving along in my Polestar 2 and having @siracusa dunk on it… :( it’s true though, those batteries do raise the floors a bit. Having said that, having Apple Maps, via CarPlay, across the instrument panel… 😙🤌🏼
@atpfm actually, @caseyliss might really like a Polestar 2. Has got Volvo safety heritage, and is a bit of a sleeper like the R - the regular AWD model can be upgraded to about 470hp. Also, design language of the interior reminds me of iPhone 5S.
@pixelpeeper I think I would! And I know @jelly loves his.

@caseyliss @pixelpeeper yessssss

join me, casey

@jelly @pixelpeeper I'm not looking to get a new car — despite the episode we just released — but they're practically giving P2s away here.
@caseyliss @pixelpeeper you underestimate my skills in PEER PRESSURE
@jelly @caseyliss you really should take one for a spin. AWD. Find a mountain to drive up, turn off the one-pedal thing and floor it. Not head-snapping, to be sure. More refined, this acceleration curve.

@jelly @caseyliss we've got one as well. They are great, though I am jealous they are now RWD instead of FWD like the model we got.

The BMW i4 is worth driving as well if you're shopping around. I know you're not, but now that Jelly is on the case, you know you want to.

@rustyshelf @caseyliss don’t offer him alternatives rusty

whose side are you on

@jelly @caseyliss as a Polestar shareholder and a former co-host of yours, obviously your side! But I know Casey loves them white BMWs and the i4 is on another level. It's on another price level as well though 🤣
@rustyshelf @jelly does the i4 come with a paper bag to place over the drivers head?

@caseyliss @rustyshelf paper bag’s not gonna get that mark off your soul buddy

but you already knew that

@pixelpeeper @atpfm @siracusa hah I was having the identical experience in my Ioniq 5 :) plenty of nice comments about both cars from the other show hosts though!
@atpfm Throughly enjoyed the episode. Thank you.
I’ve had a Kia Niro EV for 18 months and would absolutely buy it again.
If money no object, i’d have to go with the Totem GT electric 😍
@atpfm Not sure I agree the Tesla Model X is uglier than the BMW iX. I recoil when I see the iX. It may be the ugliest car I see on the road with any sort of regularity.
@atpfm has @siracusa considered the BYD Seal for the car-shaped EV? No idea if it's available in the US, to be fair, but the price of this is just a little below the Accord in Australia https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2024-byd-seal-electric-sedan-first-drive-review/

@siracusa ooof yeah definitely takes them out of the running for affordability. BYDs are super nice and comfy, sorry you don't get the option!

@atpfm enjoyed the episode, especially the last segment about what car you’d try to steer your kids toward. +1 for the Bolt EV. Teen Driver Mode.
