I see so many of the world's problems where the underlying cause is overpopulation. The planet's resources are stretched WAY beyond capacities.

When I was younger there was a Zero Population Growth (ZPG) movement. I have no idea why that went away.

#overpopulation #zpg

A second point about overpopulation: The world will not be a great place for people born now and from now on. The climate crisis is going to be TERRIBLE and that starts being terrible not so far in the future.

People don't believe it. If they did they'd think about bringing kids into such a world. Kids born now are going to have a terrible time when they are adults.

Famine. Incredible heat waves. Mass migration as people flee coastal flooding, heat, etc.

@dcjohnson It's not a fun conversation, but a lot of population control has centered racism, as in Those People need to stop having babies, so that we can buy their resources cheaply. Add in how bombastic and wrong The Population Bomb turned out, and at least the people that I've seen stopped taking it seriously.

@dcjohnson It didn't go away, it just changed its name. Now it is the Population Connection

Population Connection | 993 followers on LinkedIn. America’s voice for population stabilization | Population Connection is a national grassroots organization that educates young people and advocates progressive action to stabilize world population at a level that can be sustained by Earth's resources. We work to ensure that every woman around the world who wants to delay or prevent pregnancy and childbearing has access to the full range of health services and contraceptive supplies she needs in order to do so. Our core programs: * Educate young people about unsustainable population growth through K-12 lesson plans that reach 3 million students a year; * Inform constituents across the country about key policy issues related to family planning, reproductive health and population; * Work directly with Congress and the White House to inform family planning policy and funding levels.

@JeffC1956 @dcjohnson now they say the problem isn't overpopulation but resource maldistribution. It's both.

@carolannie Agree:
Year: Pop. (billion)
1900: Approximately 1.6
1950: Around 2.5
2000: Just over 6
2023: Estimated at 8
Paul R. Ehrlich suggests that the optimum population is 1.5 to 2 billion.
Geographer Chris Tucker estimates that 3 billion could be sustainable if human societies rapidly adopt less harmful technologies and best practices.

Our descendants into the 22nd century will be those that figure out how to shrink the population and clean up the environment.

Sustainable population - Wikipedia

@JeffC1956 @carolannie those descendants may not even be human.
@dcjohnson because it has the fundamental question of who should reduce their population which leads to racists encouraging ethic cleansing. Also in many developed nations the population has started decreasing. And last I knew the expectation was that the world’s population would start decreasing around 2050.
@norgralin It just doesn't matter, there are too many people on the planet. No one should "reduce" their population they should ALL stop having more than maybe 1 kid.
@dcjohnson That would work if we had rational public discussions but we don’t. That said, we know that urbanization and quality of life improvements decrease birthdates. So basically everything we already want to do on the left helps.
@norgralin Bill Clinton used to say that the best way to stabilize population growth is to educate women.

@dcjohnson

Actually we have just an overpopulation of greedy people.
