Tech bros love to boast about moving fast and breaking things, so it comes as some relief to find an instance where they've moved at a more stately 17 knots and yet still utterly fucked it.

In this case the "it" being carpool vehicles. Programmed to treat movement without the engine being switched on as either theft or witchcraft, they instantly bricked themselves in response.

What happened when these vehicles travelled by ferry was perhaps predictable...

For people after the original story, this has an overview (it's also resurfaced in the FT this week, but is locked behind a paywall)

GIG vehicle gets stuck on Washington ferry, resurfacing car-share concern on state’s vessels

@DreadShips

Oh! The Law of Unintended Consequences.

Assuming this relates to GPS on the cars, I imagine they got upset too at the thought of "driving" without the engine on over water! That's definitely Witchcraft!

@Henrysbridge @DreadShips
More probably the accelerometer registering plus wheels not turning. Which is stupid, clearly Bay Area techbros have never used a ferry or the Channel Tunnel or a rail/car system or a car elevator parking system or …

And these guys want to put a chip in your brain?

@BashStKid @DreadShips

It'd be an easier way of spotting if somebody was a witch rather than seeing if they weigh the same as a duck...

@DreadShips Programming industrial hardware for a wide range of use cases when you live in a clueless ivory tower is, unsurprisingly, a disaster.
@DreadShips @patterfloof And it's not like vehicle tracking companies have known about this for ages...
@DreadShips How did they cause the ferry to run aground?
@watters that's just incidental - I could have chosen an image of a ferry doing normal, competent ferry things - but why would I do that?
Bremerton-Seattle ferry runs aground on Bainbridge Island

A Washington state ferry ran aground at the south end of Bainbridge Island around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2023.

@Elwell @DreadShips the best part of that article is the deck hand. "I see more stupid stuff than you can imagine.” LOL

@DreadShips You never brick the device automatically.

NEVER.

This seems a simple rule of thumb.

@chemoelectric @DreadShips

Right. I can imagine other situations where this might trigger by accident. Putting in self destructive functionality is just a bad idea in general because it's not like you get anything for it and all it does is annoy the customer.

@rastilin @DreadShips You don't know what the situation actually is when you are having it happen.

@DreadShips

They need a bumper sticker, "I brick for tow trucks".

BWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

@DreadShips The San Francisco Bay hasn't had car ferries in a very long time, so this is indeed witchcraft from a Silicon Valley perspective.

At least until a Bay Area startup invents a high-tech method of moving cars over water without expensive bridges or tunnels.

@DreadShips I'm waiting for Tesla to announce a self driving electric car ferry that only holds one car, rusts if it gets wet, and sinks if it loses cell service.
@ids1024 @DreadShips Oh, I guess you haven’t seen this https://www.cybercatamaran.com then. Not sure if real or trolling.

@DreadShips heard a story of a woman who took a Zipcar to a national park in a remote area -- and couldn't unlock it due to no mobile-phone signal

@DreadShips

Code was clearly written by someone who never even witnessed a car being towed cause of illegal parking.

@_maleficentgirl @DreadShips Who might not even own a car, for that matter.
@DreadShips so if the car got towed for a flat tire, it would become useless?
@DreadShips
Also: getting your brakes or exhaust tested on rolling bench (or whatever it's called...)

@DreadShips Where did this happen? For Cruise and Waymo, I don't think they were deployed anywhere that had ferrys, but they understood they could be moved by towing and could even help move themselves off the tow with remote drivers (I speak from first hand experience).

Was this a Tesla FSD thing? Because those guys are real chucklefucks.

@DreadShips

How would this misfeature ever have worked? Didn't you have to ship the cars to the dealership? Or have one towed, ever?
