Hey Blueskians, if you don't like having all your stuff shoveled into a big corporate crypto VC AI, you can always come over to the Fediverse. 🙋‍♂️

And... we are actually really decentralized, and we can edit posts.

You may have been put off by Mastodon a few years ago, but much has improved.

Come give public social media a try.

If you want to have fun try to get one of the slopbots to argue about out-of-core numerical linear algebra solvers and their suitability for CPU vs GPU deployments. They quickly end up contradicting themselves because the lit is nuanced. But yeah, AGI and end of scientists.

In February 2021, a town in Brazil showed up for a groundbreaking whole-of-town randomized Covid vaccine trial, providing evidence of population effects of mass vaccination in a pandemic.

My latest @PLOS post digs into this exciting precedent, and why it matters so much:

A Unique Pandemic Control Trial - Absolutely Maybe

When I was young, while I understood pandemics that kill millions could happen in theory, I really thought they were a thing…

Absolutely Maybe

I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like

"I've been online for longer than the internet. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. 56k modems on fire in the light of Usenet. I watched IRC forks glitter in the dark near the Gateway 3000. All those moments will be lost in slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify."

Lots of speculation on X about B3.2 #covid19 variant selectively infecting kids & potential molecular mechanisms. However, one cannot say anything meaningful about which variant infects which subgroup without metadata to account for the selection of samples in sequencing runs.
Ensitrelvir was just approved in Japan for prophylaxis against SARSCOV2 #COVID19
Among 2,041 people living with COVID-19 patients, 30 of 1,030 who received it developed the disease within 10 days compared with 91 of 1,011 (9.0%) in the placebo group for relative risk ⬇️67%.

This is just insane ....

"pperl is a next-generation #Perl 5 platform written in #Rust, targeting Perl 5.42+ compatibility."

Parts of it appear to have been generated by code assist (and it is not clear what will happen to the XS modules) but 💪 work!
