After a vegan blue cheese won the Good Food Award, panicked dairy cheese makers forced the foundation to disqualify it

A vegan blue cheese won the prestigious Good Food Award, until the dairy industry forced the foundation to disqualify it with a rule-change.

Boing Boing
@glynmoody I was really interested in this, as a diet-unrestricted person who enjoys tasty food no matter where it's sourced from (and a longtime blue cheese aficionado). And I'm still interested! But I have to admit I'm unimpressed by how "all in" the company seems to be on "AI" machine learning. Feels to me like it's in direct opposition to the environmental benefits of plant based food. But maybe their model is less energy intensive? Guess I'll have to learn a little more before I try.
@doctorLURK a lot of people are impressed by shiny things...they grow out of it
@glynmoody I'm certainly willing to learn more about their pollution savings vs. traditionally made cheeses and see how that stacks up against the extra energy consumption of their model. It could be a net benefit! But in any case, I'd still like to know.
@doctorLURK @glynmoody I think it’s easy to forget that not every “AI” is a massive LLM. I’m not sure what they’re using it for, but I can’t imagine they’re using something as generic and large as ChatGPT to do something specific with cheese.
@ardouglass @glynmoody again - I'd think so too, but I'd also really like some specifics.
@doctorLURK @glynmoody specifics would be nice. I’m not trying to defend AI, I’m actually mostly opposed to it. But in specific use cases (none of which are LLMs) I think they can actually be useful. And if I can get good cheese without having to give money to the dairy industry, I’ll be happy.
@doctorLURK @glynmoody
I hate to break it to you, but many companies don't actually believe their marketing. They know that there is a demand for what they're doing and people will pay for it. Unless customers penalise them, they'll follow the money. Vegan and AI are both popular right now, that's as far as they think.
