reply with a short story about your personal history with the #Dreamcast or first #PlayStation and i will feature your words in my magazine and cite your mastodon account (with your permission, of course).

the concept is a page titled "an ode to the (console)" with real testimonials from real people.

it can be as long or as short as you want; it will be included regardless.

the reward is, uh, #RealGamerCred or something.

if you still have one of the consoles and want to take some pictures and send them here ... i would not be opposed to this either.

@buru5 In college, a friend was having trouble with a roommate (who lied to the RA that my friend had threatened him with a kendo sword, i.e., a stick) and he was dealing with admin to avoid getting kicked out of the dorm.

The Dreamcast had just been released and was hard to get. In solidarity, we put up fliers around campus for a cheap โ€œlike newโ€ Dreamcast with the roommateโ€™s number listed. He was confused, then exasperated, as he got dozens of calls over the next couple days ๐Ÿ˜‡

@buru5 #Dreamcast had the greatest racing game of all time, #SpeedDevils. I still have my Dreamcast in my media set up to this day so I can spin that up once in a while.

@pepperbar @buru5 I cannot argue with this statement! Just make sure to skip the online reissue.

I was so hyped as Speed Devils Online had some bonus content. Years went by and I finally scored a copy but it doesn't play nearly as well. The handling felt heavy and not as arcade like.

@buru5 This is the first console I really cut my fighting game teeth on, I got soul calibur (after my dad got the wrong game but swapped it for me) and from there it opened pandoras box, I got my first arcade deck the Ascii dreamcast stick (which i still have) and I think if it was a fighting game I probably played it. I played a lot of SF, capcom vs snk, MvC 1 and 2 among others. I will still bust it out from time to time

@buru5

Got an email? Mine is kind of, long. Unless you don't mind multiple posts.

@buru5
If the story features an emulator and not the console itself, is that permissible?

@DigiVoyager absolutely (not)

just kidding, yes. please send it.

It is very dry and perhaps a little too lengthy, feel free to rephrase it so that it sounds nicer

I wanted to write a whole another essay about Ogre Battle and how it led me down a rabbit of N64 emulation and the frustration I felt when I couldn't play it, and the happiness when I finally did play it on the Wii - being an avid lover of strategy titles and Unicorn Overlord reminding me of it (and Dragon Force) but that'd be too much, hah.

@DigiVoyager

this is perfect, may do some minor grammatical corrections once i am putting it on the page but won't change anything.

how would you like to be cited?

@buru5 Mastodon account is good, something like DigiVoyager @ Mastodon.Social
@DigiVoyager sounds good. incredibly interesting that Tekken is so popular in Pakistan.

@buru5
Yes, Tekken 3 was like lightning in a bottle, it was everywhere - people had it on their consoles, their computers, arcades had custom cabinets with PS1s inside them. Almost everyone in my hometown that was into games wanted a PS2 because of Tekken Tag, 4 and 5 along with GTAs, yet sadly were too poor to get it (low wages)

Our arcade owner tried to introduce some other games too, Dead or Alive 2 being one, KoF MI another but they were all rejected harshly, it was Tekken or bust.

@DigiVoyager is there an arcade in your area that you can you take a few pictures of, by chance?

@buru5
It is long gone, friend. Once PS2s and Xbox 360s became sufficiently cheap, people stopped going for the most part.

There are some Tekken arcades still but they are 530-600 km away

You can see some in this video: https://youtu.be/m_97tM-QUDI?t=202

A Tekken 8 arcade https://youtu.be/KYuRkCidzkM (also over 500 km away, sadly or I too would go and play)

Here is a photo of the one where Arslan plays

@buru5 My DC story is one of poverty. The only reason I got one was that the PS2 was unbelievably out of my price range and I was able to find a used DC for $50. As a broke college student, it was much more feasible to go without pizza for a few weeks to be able to afford it. Along with the system I picked up a copy of Sonic Adventure and put it alongside my ages old NES in my dorm room.

@buru5 Later I was able to pick up bargain basement DC games at the local mall as stores were trying to make shelf space. MvC2, Mars Matrix, Crazy Taxi, Seaman, they all got screen time on the dorm 20-inch tube TV. The DC had a flavor that no other console even tried to replicate.

#Dreamcast
@crapknocker yeah, the DC is truly a unique experience. somewhere in the middle of a PS1 and a PS2 with an aesthetic like nothing else. thanks for writing this.
