This is literal doom, but I actually find it mildly encouraging that our security and government services are being told the truth about the current state of the nation, society, and world. This is the kind of report that every single politician needs to not only read but *really* *understand*.

Quotes below:

"The situation will probably deteriorate further in the next five years, as the early effects of climate change and a global recession add their weight to the ongoing crises"

"accelerate the decline in living standards that the younger generations have already witnessed compared to earlier generations"

"the difference between the extremes of wealth is greater now in developed countries than it has been at any time in several generations"

"many Canadians under 35 are unlikely ever to be able to buy a place to live."

"Law enforcement should expect continuing social and political polarization fueled by misinformation campaigns and an increasing mistrust for all democratic institutions"

"Access to [big data] will allow private entities to develop the means to exercise undue influence over individuals and populations at an unprecedented level"

"In the wake of COVID-19, Canada's governments have normalized operating during a respiratory pandemic... the damage to the economy and to the social fabric of the nation is ongoing"

'Secret' RCMP report forecasts a bleak future in Canada

A 'secret' Royal Canadian Mounted Police report paints a dark picture of Canada's future due to climate change, misinformation, a global recession and other troubling trends.

lol. This feels apropos... how the current generation spend their lottery winnings:

"Chung, who lives with his parents, said the first thing he'll purchase will be his "own place."

He said he plans to travel "somewhere warm" with his winnings. He also said he'll share it with his parents, and might put some of the money into his hobbies. "

B.C. man plans to buy a home and travel somewhere warm with $58M lotto win | CBC News

A man from Richmond in Greater Vancouver is set for life after winning $58 million on a Lotto 6/49 ticket on March 6.

@chris A house, a vacay AND hobbies, with $58m? Hope he's happy with a studio apartment!

@chris

Consider the source.

This report effectively advertises for larger #RCMP budgets going into potentially recessionary periods. We already have data showing A) RCMP budgets are disconnected from crime rate, B) policing without the RCMP has lower death/injury for citizens, C) community-based / health-based interventions more effective and less expensive.

@amgine that's all true. What I take from it though is the bigger picture stuff.

@chris

Definite nod here, just worried they are under-/over-stating the effect on social stability in ways for their own interests when writing for the politicians who will make decisions based on their input.

@amgine are you suggesting there should have perhaps been an *introspective* section on the role security services like the RCMP have on accelerating the various crises? Say it isn't so! ;)
@chris @amgine maybe the RCMP wants to be part of the solution and tax the billionaires appropriately, enforced by their state monopoly on lawful violence.
@amgine @chris The #RCMP is not what it used to be. Now it belongs to the highest bidder.

@CanadianCrone @chris

I am torn between the flip answer "…or lowest." and the probably more honest "the RCMP's history suggests it has never been good for anyone not British."

Suffice to say they had a respected reputation, and I do not know if that reputation was justified.

@chris it's amazing how seriously Canadians take their cops' bids for bigger budgets. It baffles me.

@chris

This definitely needs to be said.

@chris my most cynical take has always been that they all know. All of them. And they also all know that when the collapse comes they have bunkers and we don't. So right now it's just running up the score on stockpiled resources and giving us something new to be distracted by every week.

The reason they are not doing anything to fix it is that they simply do not intend to.

@chris

Acknowledging the situation we are in is the first step to mitigating worst outcomes. But politicians need to start talking about the trajectory we are on honestly and openly.

Politicians are incentivised to ignore intelligence agencies, UN initiatives and think-tanks. Reports like this have been ongoing for a decade.

Large companies are preparing, our various defense forces are preparing. But the public is being kept in the dark and it's incredibly frustrating to see this continuing tiered approach to readiness.

It's not doom at all, it's the actual reality we live in. Look at RCP 8.5 and consider that we are on a much worse trajectory than the IPCC's worst case scenario. While I blame politicians for not pushing the point, the information has been out there for over a decade now.

@chris who would have expected the rcmp to be a bunch of alarmist eco-terrorist nutjob soy boy pussy snowflakes but here we are

@chris

the real wave of immigration has yet to begin.

wholes swathes of continents will yet become unlivable because of climate driven drought and temperatures in the next ten years.

@chris
Basically like everywhere else…

@chris Many people fail to understand why governments worldwide aren't doing more to protect economies. Both during the (ongoing) pandemic and during the climate breakdown (very much ongoing).

Their interest is not in defending the economy, but the economic system itself. Meaning: capitalism, and the power structures that depend on it.

And when capitalism is protected at the expense of increasingly large numbers of people, that's a road that ultimately leads to fascism.
