This is literal doom, but I actually find it mildly encouraging that our security and government services are being told the truth about the current state of the nation, society, and world. This is the kind of report that every single politician needs to not only read but *really* *understand*.

Quotes below:

"The situation will probably deteriorate further in the next five years, as the early effects of climate change and a global recession add their weight to the ongoing crises"

"accelerate the decline in living standards that the younger generations have already witnessed compared to earlier generations"

"the difference between the extremes of wealth is greater now in developed countries than it has been at any time in several generations"

"many Canadians under 35 are unlikely ever to be able to buy a place to live."

"Law enforcement should expect continuing social and political polarization fueled by misinformation campaigns and an increasing mistrust for all democratic institutions"

"Access to [big data] will allow private entities to develop the means to exercise undue influence over individuals and populations at an unprecedented level"

"In the wake of COVID-19, Canada's governments have normalized operating during a respiratory pandemic... the damage to the economy and to the social fabric of the nation is ongoing"

'Secret' RCMP report forecasts a bleak future in Canada

A 'secret' Royal Canadian Mounted Police report paints a dark picture of Canada's future due to climate change, misinformation, a global recession and other troubling trends.

@chris

Consider the source.

This report effectively advertises for larger #RCMP budgets going into potentially recessionary periods. We already have data showing A) RCMP budgets are disconnected from crime rate, B) policing without the RCMP has lower death/injury for citizens, C) community-based / health-based interventions more effective and less expensive.

@amgine that's all true. What I take from it though is the bigger picture stuff.

@chris

Definite nod here, just worried they are under-/over-stating the effect on social stability in ways for their own interests when writing for the politicians who will make decisions based on their input.

@amgine are you suggesting there should have perhaps been an *introspective* section on the role security services like the RCMP have on accelerating the various crises? Say it isn't so! ;)
@chris @amgine maybe the RCMP wants to be part of the solution and tax the billionaires appropriately, enforced by their state monopoly on lawful violence.
@amgine @chris The #RCMP is not what it used to be. Now it belongs to the highest bidder.

@CanadianCrone @chris

I am torn between the flip answer "…or lowest." and the probably more honest "the RCMP's history suggests it has never been good for anyone not British."

Suffice to say they had a respected reputation, and I do not know if that reputation was justified.
