And you wont change my mind.
@cmconseils in the rare event that I want to paste any formatting at all I only want the aspects that can be expressed in Markdown without embedded HTML: not font selection, exact size, etc.

@cmconseils I'd fight on that hill with you.

"Just the text, Mam, nothing but the text" -- Joe Friday

@cmconseils May you provide reasons why if that's not too hard for you? Not providing them is okay, we're all allowed to have opinions
@sanfierro @cmconseils Because when I copy text from one window to another, it is always because I need the text in a different document, and never because I need a line of green Blorbo Avant Condensed Bold 18-point (gold background) in the middle of a window full of black Calibri 11-point on a light grey background.

@Austin_Dern
Best: copy pasting text from dark themed application to light themed application and vice verca. 👍

Or collegue copy pastes light themed text to their light themed chat window, which decides to ignore the pasted bg color, but hard sets fg color to blackish. Guess what appears on my dark themed chat window then. 😬

@sanfierro @cmconseils

@cmconseils yeah, if i wanted my email to look like a ransom note i would do it myself!
@cmconseils Also please no "smart" selection. Because no I don't want to include the carriage return. And if that day comes that I want, i select it myself.

@Zitruskeks @cmconseils

Selecting a table would be cool, but Im willing to hold down a key for that. Formatting should be unformatted unless asked for.

@Zitruskeks @cmconseils

Likewise whatever it is that adds attribution. I know when I have to add attribution, and I do add it. I also know when I don't have to add attribution, and I just take it out.

@cmconseils Especially in MacOS where it requires a finger-busting combination of key presses.
@DeltaWye @cmconseils Yesterday I finally changed the key binding in Word to make Command-V be PasteTextOnly instead of EditPaste
@DeltaWye @cmconseils I use a Mac app called Pure Paste that will automatically clear all the formatting from the clipboard.
@cmconseils but how else can we raise awareness of this feature no one wants?
@cmconseils very much agree! I have a text editor I use for washing the formatting off when the app just won't play nice.
@cmconseils That does tend to be what I want most of the time. I set a button on my macro pad to ctrl-shft-v
@cmconseils
rAmen to that!
Yes, thank you Microsoft, it's very nice to have the option, but I have turned off the default wherever I can.
99 out of 100 times I am perfectly happy with how it comes out in plain text. And still, decades after paste with formatting was invented, 9 out of 10 times I use formatted paste, it comes out shitty.

@cmconseils
For those interested, in MS Word you can turn off the default.

And if it's not turned off, after pasting, just tap CTRL and then tap t (not CTRL-t) that changes whatever you posted to plain text.

@MennoWolff @cmconseils

Except on work systems where it might be controlled by policy or where each time you login, your prefs go poof.
@ferricoxide @cmconseils
Ok. Yeah. Then you have to take that up with your admin, or just suffer 😁

@cmconseils If you're on a Windows computer, you can download the free PowerToys from Microsoft.

One of the included utilities is "Paste As Plain Text." It lets you assign any unused key combination to the function. Mine is set to Alt+V.

@cmconseils abso freaking lutely
@cmconseils Agreed. Until then, paste to notepad, select all, copy.

@mike805 @cmconseils

I have been doing this for decades. Crazy to have to still do it in 2024.

@cmconseils In LibreOffice: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + V. This is like, every possible modifier, all at once. Easy to remember. 😉
@cmconseils
I agree, with one single solitary possible exception: If you're using WordPerfect with "Reveal Codes" mode on.

@cmconseils

And “Copy link without tracking”! 👍

@cmconseils I’m all for “paste and match formatting” as the default
@cmconseils @aaronsgiles and apps should respect the key combination for it if people use it
@cmconseils @kaffeeringe
Worst "let's make it better" decision
@cmconseils
As should 'copy url without tracer' be.

@quoidian @cmconseils

Ugh, yeah! I'm endlessly stripping strings off the end of URLs.

Or pasting a URL and it comes out as alt text.

@ned @quoidian @cmconseils
*cough* Firefox *cough*

(has a "copy URL without tracking" context menu)

@oraculix @ned @cmconseils
I use that option with Firefox. It's much appreciated but would like the 'copy including the tracking cruft' to be dropped.
@quoidian @cmconseils So glad Firefox and chrome both offer "copy URL without tracking information", now.
@cmconseils I'll get out my zombie hunting kit to support this
@cmconseils @patterfloof More to the point, this should be a user setting so you can set your default and everything should then honour _that_

@cmconseils I hate this! Its always when I copy data from a cell in Excel and paste it into Outlook or teams and it pastes it as a table instead of text.

Thankfully I've just gotten into the habit of doing ctrl+shift+v to paste as text without formatting

@cmconseils

I would also love if, when I type
-- it didn't get turned into .
@cmconseils Don't want to be too dramatic, but looking into the comments helped to alleviate "the world is^W^W^W user interfaces are doomed" stance in my head a lot.
@cmconseils I'd say that it's a bold statement to make but the formatting has been stripped so I guess it's just a plaintext statement.
@cmconseils
Schouldn't that read "pasta"?
@mythStudies

@cmconseils Twice a year I loose it and go on an extended rant at work about WordPerfect and “reveal codes.”

My coworkers give me the same blank look as when I talk about $50 a semester community college…

@cmconseils for anyone who didn't know ctrl+shift+V is paste without formatting in chrome and chrome based apps
