Some elevators help you envision equivalent measurement classifications.
(Not my photo. Just for fun I searched "Volskwagen". It's a common misspelling, apparently) https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22volskwagen%22&atb=v375-1&ia=web

@KeithDJohnson There is (was?) a website that gives you those alternatives... punch in a weight and it gives you equivalent measure in other things. I wonder what the site is and if it is still up.
@ai6yr @KeithDJohnson
The Register has an online converter which includes: weight measured in
* Adult Badger
* Great White Shark
* Skateboarding Rhinoceri
* Australian Trams

@KeithDJohnson Another random equivalent because I'm somewhat hyperfixated: 10,313.38 kilowatt-hours worth of chemical energy as stored in magnesium, which would be a solid cube 95.2 cm on each edge.

@KeithDJohnson

12,712 bananas for scale.

I would not get on an elevator with a hippo or six grizzlies, but 454 chihuahuas sounds adorable.

@KeithDJohnson @mlmartens how many treetrunks is what we want to know
@KeithDJohnson It appears that the creator of this plaque missed the State of the Union address, during which President Biden used the current smaller #Snickers bar (44 grams since last September) as an example of #Shrinkflation. 30,000 Snickers bars now weigh only 1320 kg. #SOTU
@KeithDJohnson @snipe I imagine this is very useful to Americans
@KeithDJohnson It feels incomplete without a partridge in a pear tree.
@KeithDJohnson You know what I don't see there? Imperial or American Customary Units. And that's as it should be.
@KeithDJohnson someone please fill this elevator with 30,000 Snickers bars as a gag.
@KeithDJohnson But how many small boulders the size of a large boulder? 🪨
@ElBeeToots @KeithDJohnson definitely a bolder choice of measurement.
@KeithDJohnson As usual, "1500 kg" is the only Metric unit in sight
@KeithDJohnson please load the Snickers bars into the Passat and send them my way!
@KeithDJohnson I assume, then, that's a metric hippo?
Sensible units ftw!
@KeithDJohnson Americans will use anything but the metric system.
@KeithDJohnson is that a laden or unladen Passat?
@KeithDJohnson tbh "Volskwagen" doesn't even sound as wrong as it's spelled 🤣

@KeithDJohnson

"Could you all quickly eat your 28 bananas so that I can squeeze in my chihuahua, please?"

@KeithDJohnson Americans will use anything but the metric system, or whatever.
@KeithDJohnson For this recipe you'll need:
- 4 eggs
- 3 chihuahuas of all purpose flour
- 1 seagull of water
- 4 bananas of sugar
- 1 snickers bar of salt
@KeithDJohnson May I use this (with credit) next time I do a training about writing contract scopes of work? I think it is a fun example of different ways to express information.
@KeithDJohnson they should provide an uncertainty range, something like 12712 ± 15 bananas 😁
@KeithDJohnson 454 chihuahuas is, from this very moment, my worst nightmare
@KeithDJohnson It's just for the convenience of the Americans who don't understand the metric system.
@bontchev @KeithDJohnson
I was repairing something and needed a short length to scarf in. Metric was easier for an odd length so I asked the wood lot guy to cut this to 347mm.
"I don't know how to do that!" He exclaimed.
I took him to the saw and pointed at the scale saying "100, 200, 300 and forty, 7. Right there."
"Wow is that ever easy! We should use that all the time!"

@KeithDJohnson

I press the elevator button. There's a whirring sound as it comes to my floor. The door opens. 3,061 seagulls explode out into my face, angrily flapping, trying to get away from one another. I die within seconds.

@KeithDJohnson @ThePaulMcBride For those not being able to visualize 20 people, try with 3 cows.
@KeithDJohnson Seems like pretty normal American units to me.

@KeithDJohnson
So… I have to do the conversion myself to tell if 12,000 bananas plus one grizzly is okay or too much?

Sigh… maths is hard.

@KeithDJohnson I think this is what happens when an EU engineer gets exposed to enough of the US's absolutely crazy measurement system and just snaps.
@KeithDJohnson I like that they included hippos, seagulls, etc but not lbs.
@KeithDJohnson I cannot even say it in this way.
But here is a picture of a Passat.
But its weight is about 1.800kg because its an #phev
@KeithDJohnson I knew hippos were large, but equal to *6* grizzly bears? Damn!
