Careful about using this decision to dump on the Supreme Court. There are plenty of legitimate concerns about this court, but today's ruling may not be a prime example.

For one thing, it was a unanimous ruling. The liberal justices concurred, even though they split on certain aspects of the ruling. This was going to happen.

Importantly, the court did not rule on whether Trump engaged in insurrection. Colorado determined he did. We all saw his mob. People died. It's our job to judge him.

@mastodonmigration I think someone should tell this court that if they want to amend the Constitution by adding fine print, that's the job of Congress, not SCOTUS.
@liquor_american @mastodonmigration they used to be concerned about legislating from the bench...not so much, anymore. Screw the House and Senate, the real legislature these days only has nine totally unaccountable members.
@mastodonmigration the ruling was expected, but the conservative majority chose to go further than needed to invent unnecessary hurdles:

Indeed, @heidilifeldman has an excellent piece on this: https://mastodon.social/@heidilifeldman/112038165581569990

But, they want us to be talking about the judiciary, because it is a distraction from Trump's crimes and the prospective horror of a second term.

We need to use every such opportunity to remind the nation who this guy is, what he has done, and what he will do if elected.

Sorry I'm not going to be careful to dump on the people who just cemented into law a mandate that we are only allowed to vote for the two most corrupt political parties in USA history. Imagine if Colorado said they were going to keep the Communist Party candidate off the ballot. Suddenly it's totally OK! If they dare disenfranchise the Republican or Democrat priesthood, then hell be upon them, but all other disenfranchisement is totally legal? And you want me to not dump on the Supreme Court for this? Down with the Electoral College! Give us real votes and real candidates, instead of forcing us to vote in the most un-democratic way I can imagine. At least a dictator admits that they're running the show. These sleazebags tell us to vote when the vote is a lie, then they turn around and say it's our fault when they drive us into poverty, ruin, and war.

I mean, unless they also oppose removing other qualifying political parties from the ballot. That's still corrupt as hell, but it's not as tyrannical as "only the D&R have mafia protection" rulings. However, I have the strangest feeling that we're not going to see a whole lot more political parties show up on the ballot, and Donald and Joe will be right there on top.

@cy

Totally get your anger. The point us not that that it is incorrect to dispute the ruling, but that politically it is a trap. The Republican's want us focusing on the judiciary, because when we are doing that, we are not shining a spotlight on the facts of the horror show that is Donald Trump.

Simon Rosenberg has a great piece about this here:

Shining spotlights won't do a lot of good when the Supreme Court delays deciding whether the president can break the law or not until Donald has been reelected. He's awful, but he's not the only problem here. He's not even the biggest problem. Honestly I'm half convinced he's secretly a folk hero, making such a huge ass of himself to expose just how malicious the rest of the political elites are.

I'm far more disturbed over the special treatment being given to the elite political party, destroying all semblance of democracy. That said, yes please do show everyone Donald boasting how he can't be convicted over raping that lady, how he's a tax dodger and how much he panders to unapologetic murderous fascist assholes. Just... try to keep in mind that he is a clown, meant to draw attention, that news media will exaggerate far more than its due.

@mastodonmigration what about Congress deciding who assumes the office of the President? Especially if State Legislators decide โ€œcloseโ€ elections?
@mastodonmigration Don't underestimate the power of gaslighting

@Nuncio

Absolutely, they have developed gaslighting into an art form. Check out this great piece by @Teri_Kanefield, particularly the discussion regarding the 2016 Trump/Russia "collusion" narrative...

The Russian Disinformation Attack and the Disappearing Rabbit Trick - Teri Kanefield

โ€œThe more I think about it,โ€ Heather Cox Richardson said this week, โ€œthe more it seems the main story of the past decade has been Russian disinformation to undermine U.S. democracy.โ€ This was a notable comment because Richardson follows all the major political stories from the perspective of a political historian, and she has been [โ€ฆ]

@mastodonmigration It only guarantees that another, better planned, violent insurrection will take place. Vote to extend a democratic republic for as long as possible until then.
