Students discover that vending machines on campus had a built in camera for facial recognition and profiling of students.

Instead of students coming up to a passive vending machine and making their own choice, the machine uses facial recognition to taylor the menu in order to boost sales.

@randahl The American way. Get children addicted to sugar. Make them fat. Get them on medication. Lather, Rinse, Repeat! It's quite disgusting
@randahl how can the poor HMOs sell diabetes medicine if the kids don't get addicted to sugar

Read about your Invenda machines today. I'm very impressed.

I've been a customer of yours for decades.

Not anymore.

@randahl University states: “we did a lil fucky wucky leaving the demographics feature enabled on the vending machine we bought specifically to collect demographics information. We’ll turn that off right away, as soon as we can convince the manufacturer that we didn’t know there would be demographics information, we just thought it was a good looking vending machine, and did not know there was cameras”
@randahl Windows errors always helps one way or the other :P

@randahl

On its website, they found a brochure for the vending machines which revealed that they're installed with a "demographic sensor."

@randahl I'm even more concerned about the underlying algorithms, do I have to pay more for candy, because the machine determines my face looks rich, exhausted, old or young?
@randahl Students Horrified When Ethically Bankrupt Capitalism Appears on Vending Machine, Revealing Yet More Unregulated Capitalism
@randahl this is immoral and horribly unethical
@randahl This is why all countries should have strong consumer protection laws.
@randahl it wasn't big tech watching us after all, it was big candy
