Hello Fediverse!

Today we're taking another important step in our journey to fully federate Flipboard.

This morning we federated 1,000 Flipboard Magazines curated by the publishers we have been testing federation with in addition to 20 new publishers we are federating today. These include magazines like Adventure Travel by Outside, Eater DC by Eater, Explore NYC by Thrillist, Throwbacks by SPIN, and Climate Tech by Bloomberg.

Flipboard Magazines are a simple way to curate articles, images, videos and podcasts into a thematic feed. This powerful curation tool has been at the heart of Flipboard since 2012 with millions of magazines curated since about recipes, road trips, architecture, books, tech trends and so much more.

Federated magazines become native #ActivityPub feeds and can be followed by anyone on Mastodon. For example, check out my Following the Fediverse magazine @following-the-fediverse-mike

I believe that thoughtfully curated feeds have the power to make social media a lot more effective and inspiring so I'm excited to bring millions of these magazines to the #Fediverse as we federate all public curators in the next few weeks.

Check out my Medium post for more details along with a list of some of the great magazines we federated today.

@mike @[email protected] this sounds great! How do you follow the magazines from Mastodon?

@mike @mollyanglin thank you! It seems like every mag has a handle and following that seems easy enough… but is there a list of all the handles somewhere? Or do I just hunt for them myself?
@mollyanglin try searching for flipboard.com and select the profiles tab to see the list as it stands now. As new curators are federated we will encourage them to post links to their magazines ideally with a common hashtag. We'll also do more to feature great magazines to follow.
@mike @following-the-fediverse-mike Didn't mention how to follow said magazines. Do I just do a Mastodon search for one or is there a full listing somewhere?

@rudiev @following-the-fediverse-mike yes you can search on Mastodon for these. For example if you search "The Insight Mike McCue" you'll find my magazine @the-insight-mike

In addition, accounts that have federated magazines will soon start posting links in their timelines as well as on their profiles so people can get a better sense of what magazines they are curating. We'll also be featuring great magazines all the time, especially on follow Fridays.

@mike @following-the-fediverse-mike @the-insight-mike Ok...so far nothing's showing up in my Mastodon search results. I found this by clicking a link in the original post, how would I go about following this magazine from my Mastodon account? https://flipboard.com/@thesprucemakes/gardening-and-plants-3e331j8lz

@rudiev @mike Here's a new blogpost about how to discover, follow and organize federated Magazines.

In the case of the Spruce, it looks like they haven't flipped any new content since we federated their Magazines. In the future, the second link in anything they share from their main profile (https://flipboard.social/@TheSpruceMak[email protected]) will to be a federated Magazine, rather than to the Flipboard.com site. Hope this makes sense!

@rudiev Do you see a screen that looks like this when you click on @following-the-fediverse-mike ?
@mike looks like if you do a search on Mastodon for the URL of the magazine
(like https://flipboard.com/@theverge/apple-news-a21vmd3nz for the Apple News magazine from The Verge) it will return the fediverse profile for that magazine, which you can then follow.

@hybridhavoc @mike

Nice catch.

I've been searching on Mastodon for Flipboard accounts and going with the ones with dashes in their handle that are also groups.

@mike How will we know when our account Flipboard is federated? Will a notification be sent? Or is there a list to check? Thank you
@salvomic You'll get an email in the next few weeks letting you know that your account and magazines have been federated with tips on how to promote your magazines so people can discover and follow them. There will also be an option to de-federate if you want to.
@mike Thanks for the information, very clear. We are waiting for the email. Good! 🙂
