I have the Empire of the Sun, South Pacific scenario set up and ready to go. The rule book has been a bit of a slog for me so hoping pushing the pieces will lift some of the fog.
@Pete and then even if you feel like you have a passing knowledge of the rules, knowing what to actually do is a whole other endeavor.
@gitano Agree. The "analysis paralysis" will be strong with this one.
@Pete I had that affliction for days... I finally just put the game up and set something else up that probably went through the same routine. Right now I'm committed to Atlantic Chase. What's succeeding with this one is that it has an excellent tutorial with historical narrative. It's a model for other games to follow.
@gitano I have AC on my to play list this year too. As far as EotS goes, it would be much more difficult without the fan made content on BGG and YouTube videos to help. A playbook/tutorial would be great. It takes work outside of the box to figure it out IMO. That said, I'm getting older and don't have the focus that I once did πŸ™‚
@Pete I know... This is literally me.
@Pete then this happens.
@Pete and then this...
@gitano Yup, I tend to fall back to the systems I already know how to play.
@Pete if I could just somehow figure out a way to stop buying games, maybe I'd get to a place where I actually have a few that I'm good at playing.
@gitano I gave up the idea of being good a long time ago. I like to dabble and explore new games and ideas (admittedly it's getting harder) and that doesn't leave time to get really deep in any one in particular. I did play ASL exclusively for a few years So I went down the focus path for a while too, but it turns out I'm not that good when I focus on one either πŸ˜€
@Pete I discovered years ago that I'm not a good wargamer even though I love dabbling. The moment was when I was playing StarCraft with a buddy who was an excellent wargamer. I would focus on always building up my forces and didn't really want to use them in battle. He'd come in early with the zerg hordes and just wipe me out. He was focused on destroying me and I was focused on making a nice organized in depth fighting force... never ever worked. I've never been able to shake that mindset. I've been playing Undaunted Stalingrad with my son the last few months and I haven't won a single scenario because I spend too much time in a defensive mindset and he just walks all over me.
@Pete I'm far more interested in asking Why... Why did they do this or that... Why should I do this or that... what happens if I tweak this or that small variable? Aren't those counters well made? What a neat map? If I plan right for the next 15 turns, I may be able to get some missiles set up for the late game. Man that's some hilly terrain. What's that bird over there? In the mean time my opponent has already calculated a path of acceptable odds to victory and it's clear that's going to happen.
@gitano So long as you're having fun it's all good πŸ‘ It's about the journey, not the destination
@gitano I've posted this before, but my daughter love to buy books and when I ask her if she reads them all she says, "buying books and reading books are two different hobbies". Same for me with games.
@Pete in a past life I was a serious wine geek and I couldn't imagine after opening every bottle being very confused, putting a cork in it and coming back 3 days later hoping for a different result.
