#GetFediHired #Remote

I've had more boosts on this posts in 5 minutes than I've had on anything on fb or linkedin in a year.

Thank you all!

@ralf Ive see the hashtag GetFediHired on some posts like these might add it for those following that tag. Good luck
@SarraceniaWilds thanks for the tip!
@ralf oh dude. if you have some connection issue or some such best get it sorted because a bunch of people that boosted this will be getting 22 pings now.
*22 edits × 51 boosts is 1122 notifications!
@SarraceniaWilds yeah, this laptop has a crap wifi card that disconnects frequently. #apologies.
@ralf ....how are you able to do remote work?

@SarraceniaWilds I have other machines that are more reliable for work purposes.

This is the one I leave in the store, mostly for playing Diablo 2 when there's no customers around.

@ralf

Hi Ralf,

As another dude mentioned, use hashtags. No algorithm here, so without those no one will see you. You definitely want jobs, GetFediHired plus your skills.

I was searching at the worst possible time, right after all the tech layoffs and took me almost seven months to find a position that was a good match, I was filling out 1-5 applications a day, every day. Most never replied.

Good luck with your search.

@aeu Yeah. I've done over 1800. Being limited to remote, due to my rural location in the Philippines, has also made it harder.
@ralf I have heard adding your locale is helpful as well. Perhaps tag it. I hope you find something good soon. 😊
@geekgrrl I'm exclusively #remote. Can't afford to move, and I live in a bamboo house in the middle of a sugarcane field.
@ralf Might try #Remote or #RemoteOnly then? Not sure. I’ve just heard it mentioned many times in similar posts.
@ralf @geekgrrl the timezone is still relevant for direct communications. Example: I'm in CET and need to know if I need to move my online meetings to late in the evening or very early in the morning.
@ralf good luck. For remote roles you might want to specify the timezone(s) you can most easily cover as that’s probably how many companies hiring for remote rolls organize people (by when they can easily meet consistently with others on their team)
@Rycaut @ralf This is such a depressing state of affairs.

@putnamca @Rycaut

That was about 8 months ago. I'm beyond the depression now.

If it weren't for having to scrap daily for the money to feed my kids (I have a small store, sometimes I make enough, sometimes not), I'd be completely numb.

@ralf @Rycaut

If I could help more, I would. You'll pull out.

Trends reverse, and we're the gurus.

They need us.

@ralf @putnamca @Rycaut and in the mean time, aren't any local jobs which can keep you afloat in PH (not necessarily IT-related? Best of luck 🤞

@0rkk0 @putnamca @Rycaut

I have a small store, but it isn't enough -- I've had to rely extensively on friends and family, and most of those wells are dry and relationships strained.

@ralf sending all the good wishes! I’m not in tech but I’ll boost!
You are so right about linked in- always gave me Amway vibes.
@ralf yah I've avoided that site like the plaque. I signed up for an account years ago and ended up closing it after a short while. Had more success applying for jobs on Indeed.
@ralf are you able to start a firm from where you are?
In Netherlands it costs you some hours and €60 and you are registered entrepreneur.
Then you can present your firms expertise. You can write possible clients offering them to help with the work they don't like to do, or to help with an overload of orders, or to improve their systems

@danie1 I own a small convenience store, but that's enough ... I am not looking to start a consulting firm in the tech industry; marketing myself to clients abroad (the only folks who could afford to pay me) would be a nightmare to execute.

Besides that, all my capital is gone after 20 months of unemployment.

@ralf probably i misunderstood you. What you saying is: with your expertise in your field it's easier to get a job then to get an assignment as an entrepreneur
@danie1 @ralf it’s not, because I am #remoteonly and a US expat in PH. Local companies won’t hire me because I’m a bit on the pale side; US companies won’t hire me because I’m outside the border.
@danie1 @ralf but I have no interest in being an entrepreneur. I spent the previous 15 years either working 18hrs/day or being on call 24/7. I just want to work and turn off the computer when I’m not.
@ralf man, you ought to start freelancing, even that you're opposing the idea, as I can see in the comments. There are many companies which need engineers for a particular project for a limited term, and it's too expensive for them to hire you on a salary. But if you have 5-10 good clients, you'll never be idling, as they will keep throwing work at you. I'm doing that for 15+ years in approximately the same field.
@ralf Another option is network operations, which are heavily outsourced to cheaper countries. But it's boring af to do all the configuration changes on request. You're a senior engineer, so do the most challenging part and leave the boring part to minions.
@bonkers i do some freelance work, but i'm not interested in doing the marketing/interpersonal networking stuff (while I can, I hate it quite passionately).

@ralf I don't do any marketing for myself. I just tell my customers that I have some time for a new project and they throw more work at me :)

But it requires some networking, of course. What helps is helping people in public forums, publishing guides, sharing code on GitHub.

@bonkers That's the issue -- at 20 months of unemployment, my savings are depleted and I can not afford to spend time on tasks that "might pay later."

I need to spend time on tasks that pay *right now*.

Even if it's just asking people for 20 bucks so I can buy food for the kids.

@ralf look at freelancer sites like Upwork. Do you speak German? There's freelancermap.de and Gulp, sometimes they have remote jobs, but rarely.
@bonkers despite my german name, my family emigrated in the 1830s so I just know a few German swear words from the 6 months i spent in Zurich.
@bonkers I've done upwork, but it's low rate of return given my location (Philippines), despite being a US citizen and expat.
@ralf well, you need to spend a few days selling yourself, there's no way around it.

@bonkers

Some people are better suited to entrepreneurial ventures in person rather than online.

If I have to work online in tech, I'd rather work for someone else.

Founder George Kurtz realized that a brand new approach was needed — one that combines the most advanced endpoint protection with expert intelligence to pinpoint the adversaries perpetrating the attacks, not just the malware. There’s much more to the story of how Falcon has redefined endpoint protection but there’s only one thing to remember about CrowdStrike: We stop breaches.

@erraggy @ralf Looking for remote (EU based) Senior Fullstack or Senior Frontend roles by chance?
@pedrosanta
There's a search on the careers site I linked above. I'm not sure beyond my own team.
@ralf https://automattic.com/work-with-us - How's your WordPress ability?
Work With Us

Want to make the web a better place for more than a billion people each month? We’re hiring.

Automattic

@quanin I applied for automattic over a year ago. I'd love to work there -- my Wordpress is more ... "hacking things to make them work the way I want them to, when necessary."

Anything that can be done in PHP, I've probably done it -- including modifying the WP core.

@ralf @quanin FYI, re-applying to a company for new job posts is totally a thing — just because you weren’t selected the first time doesn’t mean you’re banned forever… In this thread, I’ve seen you mention having applied ‘before’, but not ‘again’. And saying in an interview that you’ve applied for other jobs at company Z is not a bad thing - it’s probably a great thing to say “Z has a really good reputation, it’s why I want to work here.”

@JustinDerrick @quanin

While I agree, most recruiters (and ATS's) live by the infamous Dr. House mantra that "persistence does not equal worthiness."

In addition, being ghosted by a company and not even receiving a proper automated rejection E-mail decreases the likelihood that I will apply there multiple times (not saying that was the case with automattic, but it has been with many other companies).

@ralf @JustinDerrick We've moved to an interest-based hiring model, so if you submit your application and they create an opening that fits you, they'll call you (well,probably email). Referring you might help, but that still assumes there's a slot they can fit your skillset in. Based on your background though, I don't see why you wouldn't get a look.

@quanin @JustinDerrick

James, good to know. I figure once a year isn't too frequently to apply, anyway, so I did.

@ralf @JustinDerrick Excellent. And yeah, they usually like you to wait a year between applications. But also, thing to keep in mind is you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I mean, sure you might not get hired if you apply. But you definitely won't if you don't.
@quanin @ralf @JustinDerrick if you don't fire, you'll never hit the bullseye. Thanks for reminding me about that link, as it's literally been a year and half since I poked them, time to poke them again.

@quanin @JustinDerrick
@munchkinbear

As I mentioned, I've taken over 1800 shots in the last 6 months and missed 100% of those.

I appreciate all the advice -- but what I need is an offer, or a referral, or something with a higher percentage of success than "take a shot."

I have children. Spraying resumes and applications is not working.

@quanin Given the state of things, I'd probably need a referral to proceed with that, but I have a lot more to offer -- especially on the systems engineering side -- than just PHP (which I'm quite good at as I've been doing it since PHP3).
@ralf this is the first time I’ve heard of #linkedin as a “cesspool” of #toxicpositivity and LOL’d - that’s right on the money! I only use it as an online resume and just make sure my profile is SEO’d well to show up in recruiter searches
@ralf
Dunno man, LinkedIn got me lots of interviews and potential jobs.....
Try going to related MeetUp events.

@Okanogen

That whole last sentence would ensure I'd never get hired anywhere.

@ralf Take a look at https://hpc.social/jobs - I think there are many there who would jump at a chance to hire you.
hpc.social - Jobs

Community jobs feed

hpc.social - Jobs

@AlanSill there are 3 fully remote positions (which i'd require, I have a 1-year-old baby that I can't leave behind in the Philippines).

I'll have a go at all 3 of them, qualified or not.

@ralf I have had some rude questions on job interviews. Like what is my sexual orientation, and a list of 35 orientations without a single answer I liked. Seriously like WTF. And some other rude questions.

@ludiusvox

I'd have just said "I have a predilection for your mom. Next question please."
