holy shit mozilla has a new issue tracker documenting all of the ways that apple, google, and microsoft purposefully put third party browsers at a disadvantage and is calling for action https://mozilla.github.io/platform-tilt/
Platform Tilt - Mozilla

Platform Tilt tracks technical issues in major software platforms which disadvantage Firefox relative to the first-party browser.

Platform Tilt: Documenting the Uneven Playing Field for an Independent Browser Like Firefox – Open Policy & Advocacy

Browsers are the principal gateway connecting people to the open Internet, acting as their agent and shaping their experience. The central role of browsers has long motivated us to build ...

Open Policy & Advocacy
@nano This is πŸ”₯ and is *exactly* what Mozilla needs to be doing to build credibility & backing. It's so refreshing to see.
@dalias yeah this feels like a really old-mozilla move
@nano it's not even complete yet too. Loads of additions metioned in the HN thread on this.
@nano but unfortunately since they did some less than ideal shit in the past this is irrelevant and they're as bad as Google, I will now install Vivaldi/Brave, who cares that it helps Google get an even stronger monopoly?
@hazelnot what's wrong with Vivaldi?
@vuhlyk2 @hazelnot it use Blink, the html rendering engine of Chrome
@vuhlyk2 It's yet another reskinned Chrome, which means using it gives Google more control over the web, same as using Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or any number of other Chromium-based browsers

@nano rare mozilla W, was hoping for a page detailing all the ways platform holders fuck people over

really hope this page gets to the people who need to know this (lawmakers mainly), especially with the iOS bullshit, cause sideloading wouldn't be enough for things like JIT and child processes

ik it's not mozilla's forte but something similar for gaming platforms would be fire

@nano Starting with "App Store forbids third-party browser engines #1" which is a consequence of Apple's already abusive policy forbidding the end user from scripting their phone.
@nano They should create another issue tracker for adding all the ways #mozilla has been putting #firefox at a disadvantage.
@nano I hope @mozilla will call up regulators like @EU_Commission [which forced #Microsoft to allow 3rd party Browsers in #Windows7] and @[email protected] amidst their #AntiCompetitive practises.
@nano …hosted on a Microsoft service :(
@nano Very cool :3 Love seeing Mozilla put themselves out there like this
@[email protected] this is awesome and should've been done a long time ago, but good job mozilla for doing it
@[email protected] I do also think that google should allow users to change the default browser webview unless there's a specific reason it needs chrome. most roms force you to use the one built in.
@Jessica @[email protected] funnily enough, the Android version of Pixels actually is pretty good in that regard. You can just disable Chrome without any weird methods and it'll use the next best browser available. And if Firefox is the only browser installed, guess what? Even Google apps will use Firefox
@mstar @[email protected] it depends tho because there's usually a version of web view that apps internally use and disabling it will break most apps
@Jessica @[email protected] It really doesn't though. Every single webview I open on my phone is Firefox. Every single one works the same. The API implemented for WebViews is enforced by Android
@mstar @[email protected] if you don't have this it breaks all apps and Firefox can't be used
It can be replaced but Firefox can't work
@mstar @[email protected] gecko view isn't a drop in replacement for Android system web view
@Jessica @[email protected] Considering that literally everything that opens anything web still works fine (including all of Google services, Discord, Arbeitsagentur, banking, etc), I'd argue that it does in fact use firefox as intended
@mstar @[email protected] this isn't a "brings up a website" view this is a "this app is based off a website" code which most modern apps use and build on top of.
You must have a built in system webview that isn't visible or you're unaware of.
@Jessica @[email protected] double checked. While you can set the default webview in the dev settings, Mozilla doesn't offer one for download
So technically we are both wrong. I in that it already is used, you in that you can't control that aspect
@mstar @[email protected] android system web view is electron for phones except they all use the same install of chromium

@nano

Of course it's just natural to host that on GitHub.

@nano I did notice that Firefox nearly does not work with any of Microsoft links from teams etc.
@nano That strikes me as an unlikely path towards success ... more like a bitter last-gasp attempt to extract success from a brutal mauling by people who don't want you to succeed.
@AlgoCompSynth @nano
As is hinted in the introduction this documentation is most likely meant to become fodder for future regulatory law makers.
@nano Not being able to use a proper Firefox app is the worst thing about iOS imho.
@[email protected] The example where you can spoof your user agent to get the full experience is extra insidious. If you do that, Google has statistics showing lower Firefox usage.
@nano While interesting, I don't get what they hope to achieve with this. The GitHub repo isn't something the upstream companies care about. It's not on their property, so if Moz were hoping for some virality on conversations in these issues, I can't see that happening. It'll end up being a quiet, unregarded repo, with no conversations, and no resolutions, surely?
