I can't wait until we have working 3D scanners. If I were to speculate, though, it seems more likely that we will witness the emergence of 3D models crafted by artificial intelligence using photographic data, prior to the widespread availability of 3D scanners as consumer hardware.
@fribbledom I mean it's pretty impressive what photogrammetry techniques have been able to do for years without "AI", and sure, there's been research for ages on trying to fill in gaps in image data with neural nets or whatever, so… I guess?

@fribbledom so what are the types of cameras that we're using now for 3D imaging?

as a specific example: I've seen quite a few of those "get a 3D figure of YOU" booths at conventions before 🤔

@fribbledom

For precision measures, in the micron kingdom, a dedicated CMM¹ is still better than an optical scanner.

Here is an article about it:

A sensor like the Haimer can be used to transform a CNC machine into a sort of CMM:

The Pros and Costs of CMMs: What to Consider When Buying a CMM

How do you know if you need a CMM? Here are the costs to consider when buying a CMM and the benefits they offer for your inspection and quality processes.

@fribbledom Photogrammetry; Ever heard of it?
@fribbledom I'm betting on AI assisted photogrammetry letting you use your consumer phone camera with little skill and in bad conditions before there's consumer grade scanner too.
@fribbledom my dentist made a crown for one of my teeth starting with a scan rather than an impression of the tooth (or the facing ones) must have been at least 5 years ago — so some 3D scanning exists

@michal

Ah, yeah. The Creality scanner is probably a prime example of the shit that's currently being sold.

@fribbledom I guess you should then clarify your definition of "working 3d scanner", since that definitely looks like a "working 3d scanner" to me.

@michal

The resolution of these scanners is ridiculous. It may work for big statues and other objects that lack any detail, but that's about it.

The proprietary drivers and software are painful to use and require so much post-processing, you may as well start modelling from scratch.
