Post Canada's #OnlineNewsAct and Meta's ban on Canadian news content, sharing journalism on social media has been tough to say the least.

And yet The Tyee has seen much growth here on #Mastodon.

We want to see how far we can go. If you enjoy coming across Tyee stories on your Mastodon feeds, share our profile with your friends, or repost this toot, to help us get to 6,000 followers. 🐘🌟🗞

@rbos We appreciate you, Rob!

@thetyee

If you post obfuscated links, they may not get blocked.

@thetyee Just so you know, I don’t give a damn about Facebook or Instagram blocking my news. I am not on Facebook, I use Instagram not for news but for hobbies I’m interested in. I have never used Instagram and when I had Facebook for news. I have always gone straight to the source.
@Lpm1 Thanks for this insight, Elizabeth!
@thetyee Canada passed a law saying that if anyone posted a link to a news article belonging to a Canadian publication, Meta would have to pay, even though Meta wasn't choosing what to link, the users were. I wasn't surprised that they said "no deal", because they don't give a crap about news but they do care about profit. What Canada should have done instead is pass a tax on digital advertising, and use some of that money to fund journalism. The only way Meta and Google could escape that would be to leave Canada altogether.
And I am viewing this from Pixelfed and not Mastodon, the fediverse is great. Pixelfed is almost 1:1 with instagram before meta took over.
@thetyee Heya! For greater reach, consider including the tags ‘Canada’ & ‘Canadian’, unless you consider that a bit too “shouting from the rooftops” (so to speak).
