There is no such thing as a self-made person.

Every business person has used our vast public infrastructure, which the taxpayers paid for, to make their money

@georgelakoff WTP should sue him (class action) for all his frivolous lawsuits that tie up tax-paid courts and law enforcement. Plus all the mental health problems incurred by a great deal of the the population.
@georgelakoff The only self made man is a feral child. Once he encounters civilization, he'll be moulded into something unrecognizable.
@drakakis @georgelakoff Typical self made feral child not acknowledging the wolves that raised them.

@georgelakoff

The majority of whom have then worked on degrading and privatizing public infrastructure so that the ladder isn't just pulled up underneath them, but set alight with chlorine trifluoride and difluorine dioxide.

@georgelakoff
I remember when Obama said something similar and right wingers went bananas. They just don’t get it…
@georgelakoff there is also no single inventor or creator. Every inventor used billions of small pieces of Information gathered from other inventions before.
@georgelakoff
“Infrastructure” could also include the education system that provides able employees, the justice system that enables contract enforcement that is the key to any functioning economy, the patent system that ensures incentives for risk taking and innovation, govt regulation that ensures transparency and accountability, etc. All of these have their faults and unjust aspects and need to be improved but in general they lie behind all wealth creation.
@georgelakoff every person has access to the same resources however these people found a way to use it the best, thats why they are self made. Meaning of self made is not that nothing was taken from others it is just that they successfully navigated the world fished the opportunities and made best of it by themselves.

@georgelakoff

Indeed - and it's not just 'public' infrastructure. In another context I just linked the UN-funded study that concluded NONE of the world's major industries would make any money if they paid for their real 'externalities' (such as environmental costs). See https://naturalcapitalcoalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Trucost-Nat-Cap-at-Risk-Final-Report-web.pdf (link opens a big .pdf).

@georgelakoff In principle I agree, but then I present to you....

Cary Grant.

@georgelakoff that is why I hate word so much "resourceful".
Ohh yes, you imply someone has abused and most likely "borrowed" and outrighted stolen resources to advance his position, well said.
Yes, of course I recognise connecting things together requires human skills, and it is good to see someone I root for figuring things out, but also I respect anyone recognising that he has built his success relying on others.
@georgelakoff and they usually pay quite large tax bills. There are probably some warlords in places we don’t think about that are self made but they usually don’t live long.
@georgelakoff For the first few years of our lives people put in thousands of hours of largely unpaid labour to keep us alive.
