The growing inaccessibility of science - Nature

That science has become more difficult for nonspecialists to understand is a truth universally acknowledged. Here is a measure of the extent of the process.

Nature
@paulmasson @theimagecaptioner I'd guess it's not paywalled *anymore*. Anyway, the Nature commentary is about incomprehensibility, not cost
@theimagecaptioner I hope one day the internet will be free from all the paywalls in front of research papers, especially publicly funded #research

Knowing how much ‘the journal Science’ typically charges, I’ve been surprised in the past decade to see them become increasingly less agressive with the paywall.

@theimagecaptioner @stevelieber

I had no problem with subscriptions in the 90s, because you would write a check or money order for a year, and the subscription would merely reach the end of term. In the past 20 years, they’ve learned to get a credit card and refuse to cancel, perpetually charging you.

And that’s why no one subscribes to magazines or newspapers any more.

@theimagecaptioner It's a touch choice, but I've gotta hand it it to nature.com! That $199 price tag is hilarious!
@theimagecaptioner the right one does it better as there seems to be another Option in the left one...
@theimagecaptioner Was going to say The NY Times for also writing "breadcumb" as "bread crumb" but then nature swoops in with sentence case on a title.
