It's stunning that the technical leader of the World Health Organization's COVID-19 response, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, publically reaffirmed that COVID-19 is still a global health threat and still a pandemic, yet hardly any media outlet has covered this except for this one.

COVID Is 'Still a Pandemic,' WHO Leader Says

The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, according to one of the World Health Organization’s leading infectious disease experts

The Messenger

It isn't an accident the press is doubling down on misinformation by using terms like "post-pandemic," when WHO leaders are still saying COVID is a pandemic. ICYMI this is an excellent piece by Julia Doubleday about the media's role in manufacturing consent.

How the press manufactured consent for never-ending COVID reinfections

Continual reinfection was not the "new normal" Biden advertised. How did we get here?

@luckytran There is a major thing missed in this analysis and that is how neoliberalism (lol at calling bidens crowd leftists) and capitalism is the reason this occurred. Vaccines were a product sold to individuals, thus are within the possible solutions - everything else would require our society to prioritize things that weren't mass market products and couldnt make money. Sure filters would help, but that would require raising school budgets - which can't happen in our horrible society because that might mean raising taxes. Honestly, there was no other way this could turn out, capitalism is our hammer and anything that isnt a nail is not a problem. COVID couldnt be beat by capitalist solutions, so there isn't a COVID problem.
@luckytran Also, I think the press is no longer (or hardly) independent these days. They're either company or government controlled, and such institutions don't want all this to come out. It creates unrest and makes it harder to control the masses.

@luckytran

All SARS-CoV-2 derivatives infuse the host with reservoirs of perpetually replicating virus. Infected cells are preternaturally durable, resistant to CTL-mediated remediation and autophagy. Antibodies suppress the virus in the humors, but SARS viruses are masters at cell-to-cell transmission, so the infection burns on.

At some point, as their health predictably fails, the general public is going to want the blood of this schadenpresse. I won't stand in their way.

@luckytran
Frightening. The political normalizing COVID and casting doubt on science is a fantastic coup for the right. "It is rejection of state responsibility for public welfare, paired with complete shredding of early-pandemic solidarity that was replaced with a poisonous “us vs them” worldview. I would argue it is the most thorough victory of the far-right in memory, embedding its eugenicist logic into the very foundation of public beliefs about health, disability, and who deserves safety."
@luckytran
and even they frame it as "she said," and not "this is how it is, it hasn't changed."
@luckytran Is the WHO still promoting pseudoscience? see https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1690353139004674048

@luckytran Nothing is more important than your health… except for your money.
@luckytran it's only stunning if you believe that media outlets are actually tuned up to spread important information rather than, you know, sell ad space and manufacture consent.
@luckytran *heavily sighs in disabled and immune-compromised* Really wishing people would considering acknowledging this fact. COVID is still k*lling and disabling many individuals. I've not recovered since and I was already Chronically ill prior to contracting COVID. Long COVID has worsened my health amd pre existing symptoms of other diseases.
@luckytran @isotopp WHO still have their tweet online that Covid is not airborne.
Does an org that says Covid is still a thing and then goes on to tell you to wash your hands to fix it really matter?
They should lobby for cleaner air in hospitals, at doctors etc. This needs to go into standards.

@luckytran Governments and health providers are also in denial.

For example, in the UK boosters are not available to most people outside defined risk groups. In Switzerland, boosters are free for people in risk groups, but you can pay for a booster if you're not in a risk group.

So even in wealthy countries with good healthcare, there are arbitrary rules and economic factors preventing people from taking sensible steps to protect themselves and their communities from this ongoing pandemic.

@luckytran @kurtsh of course not. This would raise uncomfortable questions.
@luckytran Here in the UK there is a junior Doctor’s strike just starting today. Fearful time for unpaid family carers up and down the country I fully support their action, must put the fear aside, it doesn’t help.

@luckytran

Do you know the researches, study of "The Lancet"? It's true.

The governments don't protect us working-class people ... and on the other hand the politicians specially in Germany are crying: "We don't have workers!!!" But: They let us die in zoonotic pandemias, #climatecrises and wars. By doing this, they are digging global capitalism its grave.

After mass-extinction of the current humanity, the next will black:

Chernobyl black frogs reveal evolution in action

The accident at reactor four of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 generated the largest release of radioactive material into the environment in human history. The impact of the acute exposure to high doses of radiation was severe for the environment and the human population. But more than three decades after the accident, Chernobyl has become one of the largest nature reserves in Europe. A diverse range of endangered species finds refuge there today, including bears, wolves, and lynxes.

@luckytran Tell me about it, I work in a care, and continue to see people get very sick with covid, I myself as I comment have covid, They act as if covid is no longer a problem, but it really is, there's new strains coming up, and these strains are drastically worse than the first covid variant, I agree with the WHO Leader, this needs more media coverage for sure!
@luckytran @sfphotogirl Can people and the media stop saying “back in the pandemic”?

@luckytran

Anything that goes on long enough is 'normalized'.

Biological organisms can't afford to be in permanent high alert modus, so they switch back to a more relaxed modus when danger fails to materialize.

Now the potential danger has become part of the 'normal' daily background.

Think living with Covid threat, Japan and earhquakes, living near an active volcano, climate change [ alas ].

@luckytran

But this is silly! We already officially declared it NOT A PANDEMIC and everyone went back to work, partying, churching and eating in restaurants.
