👋 Hello, new followers! We're the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, both a university museum and the official state art museum. We celebrated our 75th birthday in 2023, and we have a collection of around 20,000 objects: American paintings, decorative arts, works on paper, much more. Mastodon feels like a good place for us given our academic and public focus. ❤️
@georgiamuseum 👋

@georgiamuseum Welcome! I'm happy to discover you here!
@georgiamuseum Hi will you be featuring parts of your collection here? How’s your collection of American print artists?
@Bwacton Hiya! Man oh man, if you like American prints, have we got a collection for you! Works on paper are the biggest part of our 18,000+ work collection.
@georgiamuseum Hi any chance you could start posting some of your American print artists here? I’ve taken a few print courses at the local University and then Covid hit so I’m setting up my own studio and volunteer to maintain the presses at the local city art centre. But I really feel cut off from seeing other artists works.
@Bwacton Sure! We feature a lot of art on our Instagram, too, so that's definitely worth checking out.
@georgiamuseum
Welcome! Do you have any works by the outsider artist Howard Finster? (Best known for creating the cover for an REM album)

@taoish We have several! You can see all of them here: https://emuseum.georgiamuseum.org/search/finster

The biggest and best known is a large cutout that mentions the University of Georgia as a thing that helped Howard "grow like a tree." ❤️

@georgiamuseum Do you have any works by former President Jimmy Carter? He seems to be seen as simple farmer from Georgia, but his intellect goes beyond that. Would be interesting to see what he views of art.
@technoid_ We don't have any works of art _by_ President Carter, but we do have a whole collection created to honor his election in 1976, including works by Patrick Ireland and Gordon Matta Clarke. https://www.nytimes.com/1976/12/16/archives/farout-art-to-honor-carter-donated-to-georgia-museum.html?mwgrp=a-dbar&unlocked_article_code=1.Jk0.M8m0.QGlfypne81NB&hpgrp=ar-abar&smid=url-share

@georgiamuseum I was just today looking at the book from the Reconstructions photography show you did a while ago. Good to see you here! I hope to get back before too long.
@MonicaCMiller Thanks! It's a lovely book, and the essays are smart and thoughtful.
@georgiamuseum welcome to the best social media. Have a cup of tea and share your knowledge with us
@georgiamuseum hell yeah, as a resident of the sister state of louisiana I give you a neighborly welcome!
@georgiamuseum Welcome! 🤗 Next time I'm in #AthensGA, I'd look forward to stopping by.
@georgiamuseum a warm welcome and boosts from Toronto!
@georgiamuseum got any mastodons?
@aardvark Unfortunately, no! Just art.

@georgiamuseum Years ago, I sold my greeting cards at the Athens location of your museum. I believe it is the same location. My keyboard is in the French mode, so I could not use some of my keyboard keys. I will restart. Have a good week. David
@daveshuken No doubt the same location! We are in Athens. ❤️

@georgiamuseum It was awhile ago.

Once was in Atlanta, GA and the museum, I think it was called the High Museum was really lovely.

Thanks for the reply,

Have a good week,

Dave

@daveshuken The High Museum is still in Atlanta and is also a great museum. We're friends but not otherwise connected.
@georgiamuseum Thanks, for your reply. It was a long time ago when I sold those cards to your museum. Have a good summer. Dave Shuken
