The stereotype of Christmas is festivity, but a lot of us may be in socially difficult or isolated situations. To help us all support each other, there's a special hashtag for friendly chats where anyone can take part:

➡️ #JoinIn

Search or follow it to find discussions, mention it in posts to start new discussions.

Many use #JoinIn for fun topics like baking bread, spotting birds or listening to music. Others have more serious thoughts. Whatever it is, stay friendly and supportive! 🥰

p.s. As an experiment this year, to help people who are on servers that haven't federated much yet, have also just started a JoinIn group at:

➡️ @joinin

This is separate from the hashtag, you can follow both or either.

Groups work a bit differently to hashtags. You have to follow groups to see their posts, but they federate much better. Even people on servers with no connections will still see all posts from all groups they follow. More info about Fediverse groups: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

How to use discussion groups on Mastodon and the Fediverse | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

Don't normally do this, but bumping this thread up to remind anyone feeling isolated over Christmas that you can find friendly people on the hashtag #JoinIn and the group @joinin

Even if you're with others, that can sometimes be lonely too, and you may be needing some escape. Or maybe you just fancy a random chat.

Whatever it is, you're not the only one, there are others who are up for a chinwag and this tag and this group are where you'll find them.

Take care everyone, wherever you are ❤️

@FediTips @joinin and Happy Holidays a good one for you as well. Thanks for the thought. 🙂👍

@FediTips

I just read the article about groups on Mastodon and the Fediverse. This is a nice article, however at the end it is said that "There’s a Reddit-style link aggregation and discussion platform called Kbin." This is true, but I noticed (by using it on a nearly daily basis) that Lemmy (also a Reddit-style link aggregator) is also a really active discussion platform, with a lot of different instances for different communities. I think it deserves to be added too.

Content warning: Please don't use Lemmy :( Human rights, oppression

Mastodon 🐘
@FediTips joining that group doesn't seem to work with #Phanpy
@FediTips I like that a helping hashtag started 13 years ago by a comedian from Newcastle has made it's way to Mastodon 😊

@Jbasoo

Indeed! Sarah Millican is a gem!

@FediTips But don't get it confused with discussions about the #Eurovision Song Contest 2014, which used #JoinUs as its official slogan.
@FediTips Or some of us don’t give a flying F about the holiday, but are under constant pressure by society to DO something or GO somewhere for Xmas because people can’t wrap their heads around someone who just doesn’t care and would rather lay on the sofa avoiding the stress.
