can you pls help me understand this confusing behaviour in my Notifications timeline?

at some parts of the day, typically soon after beginning browsing in the mornings, the access in that column to Mentions is a nice convenient checkbox, which when selected uses the same column but displays only the mentions in it... ALL my other timelines to left & right remain visible.

however, from later in the mornings, that behaviour entirely changes, to a much poorer UI; see pic. the previously convenient mentions checkbox is now only a link, which opens an overlay on top of the whole multi-column view, from which i need to use the browser navigation buttons to get back to my normal view. this is quite unpleasant to use, compared to the elegant simplicity of the "earlier" behaviour.

why does this happen, & how can it be stopped? thx.

The app (sometimes) doesn't count the remaining characters correctly when writing a post.

The count, in certain situations, differs from the #Mastodon web interface one.

Some posts with multiple recipients don't show this :-(
