Ban repeat liars from live interviews.

Never put a lie in the headline.

Use a truth sandwich when reporting on lies.

-Don’t take the bait (stop rewarding drama with visibility)

Abandon the social media algorithm (don’t let X dictate the news cycle)

What other basic rules can help the political press avoid the mistakes of 2016 in 2024?

Trump 2024: Has the press learned anything?

Rules to protect truth amid the coming authoritarian onslaught

FrameLab
@georgelakoff you do know it’s not a learning problem, right? They will never take your good advice because they are on team fascism. Telling the truth is nowhere on their agenda. I am of course referring to the decision makers, who set the talking points, or as it’s called now, the narrative.

@edgeoforever @georgelakoff

Sure, but it all applies to us as well, and we certainly can and need to learn, especially not taking the outrage bait.

The media sure as hell isn't going to save us, we need to save ourselves.

@edgeoforever @georgelakoff

That may be true.

There is no need to further the spread of their kind of poison. It is a question of social sanitation.

@georgelakoff - Don't ever quote lies or hate speech. Circumscribe at most, and never in 'neutral' terms. Think of how you would treat a terrorist manifesto.
@georgelakoff
But but ... Dollars!!!
@jhall251 @georgelakoff MSM are for-profit businesses that exists for no purpose other than maximizing short term revenue. Every one of these points increase clicks and shares.

@georgelakoff

Since ‘the press’ is owned by billionaires and big corporations, I think this is being done now by design not ignorance.

@georgelakoff It seems so easy, its sad to see the direction the media takes.
@georgelakoff the media knows what’s up, they’re the spoon that stirring the shit, it’s all about ratings and the green stuff.
@georgelakoff
The one that everyone is quoting these days, “It’s not the odds, but the stakes”. I listened to a slate podcast yesterday where the journalists spent 20 minutes describing how people “feel” about the economy. One said “Inflation is so hard to understand. I also want prices to stay the same as they were 20 years ago” thereby validating ignorant voters’ feelings about the economy. Journalists need to help readers/listeners understand not hold up a mirror to their ignorance.

@ForeverExpat @georgelakoff

The people may feel all they want to about the economy.

When they loose democracy they loose whatever say they still had on the economy.

Look at the project2025 web site to find out what horrors are awaiting.

@georgelakoff Alas - the mainstream media would have nothing much to fill their pages if they didn’t cover the likes of liars like Orange face and the newly kicked out Congressman who probably has a bright future ahead in the Party that loves lies #gop

@georgelakoff Fix Citizens United (in the US), and bring back meaningful antitrust measures to break up huge media empires, and fund a serious public news option.

Murdoch/Koch/Bezos owning our media is a big part of this.

@georgelakoff Point number one is the most important. Broadcasting blatant and refutable lies gives them validity. Why doesn’t the media get it? Because it generates clicks, views, and sensationalism. Truth doesn’t matter. Truth doesn’t sell. Reporting destruction until democracy dies is more interesting than trying to stop it.
@georgelakoff The Fourth Estate will never learn.
@georgelakoff You don't need a quote from the "other side" to rebut a lie. If somebody says something false, you're allowed to say so yourself.
@georgelakoff
Posting Twitter reaction takes is no substitute for journalism either

@solargroovy @georgelakoff

If it is journalism, it is LAZY journalism by people unwilling to do the work.

Real journalism is propublica uncovering the Clarence Thomas connection with billionaire Harlan Crow.

@georgelakoff They have learned something: Having bullshit artists on means people watch and pass their links around. That means advertising in front of eyes.

@georgelakoff

@Ruth_Mottram

Simply don't report on the bullsh.t stuff right-wingers brag about. Every mention - even saying "OMG how racist.. " is a win for them, it is Airtime and Newsmention. Just ignore the crazy stuff, only report about the moderate ideas - as media does with leftwingers since like 4ever. They will say, it's cencorship. Also something, media should ignore

@georgelakoff

@Ruth_Mottram

Stuff like this... trump will party about this article, it benefits him and raises hislchances to win. I really don't understand, why media outlets celebrate their angstlust for rigthwing extremists...

Why a Second Trump Presidency May Be More Radical Than His First https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/04/us/politics/trump-2025-overview.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

Why a Second Trump Presidency May Be More Radical Than His First

Donald Trump has long exhibited authoritarian impulses, but his policy operation is now more sophisticated, and the buffers to check him are weaker.

The New York Times

@georgelakoff

What is at stake in second Trump presidency?

#Democracy will be replaced with a #Authoritarian rule

https://presswatchers.org/2023/11/critics-call-such-ideas-dangerous-let-me-rewrite-that-for-you/

Critizing the way Mainstream Media portrays a possible Trump president. A partial rewrite of some highly relevant newspaper articles as examples.

'Critics call such ideas dangerous'? Let me rewrite that for you | Press Watch

Our major news outlets are hinting at Trump's authoritarianism when they should be sounding the alarm.

Press Watch
@georgelakoff Ik vind dat wel heel onaardig tegenover Lies.

@georgelakoff

👉 And don't link to or RT them directly (this feeds social media and search engine visibility algorithms) 👈

A text quote or screenshot is almost always sufficient.

@georgelakoff
Unfortunately it's not only the press that didn't learn anything, half of the American voting population are still voting for this narcissistic man-child! What's wrong with you my American neighbours? What will it take for you to realise that you are perpetrating a lawless dictatorship by supporting Trump? How I wish you could see him from the world's point of view!

@georgelakoff

Damn good rules, and they can be seeds to more rules.

Instead of "without evidence" use "baseless lies"
Instead of repeating the new bullshit chaotic uttered from the traffic cone tyrant's mouth sphincter, just say "Trump lied again" "Trump insulted amd tried to farm fear and hate"

@georgelakoff

If they indeed want to do better, they can spike most of the stories about who's winning, and put their resources into telling what those politicians plan to do if elected.

@georgelakoff put “politician does x” stories on page 1 and “Politician says x” stories on page A15.
