I have to ask: Why are you thinking this?
@SpaceLifeForm Like the part of me that really gets excited about new #riscv developments, or #jimkeller talks, or the wild ride that happens if you can get the #slackware community excited about some feature in #inxi that they care about, like cpus. Or the #AntiX people about stuff they care about, like light window managers, screensaver/lockers, etc.
That stuff just does not map at all to non tech types. Nor should it.
I understand your thinking on this.
But, non-tech people need to learn that there in an intersection that they may be missing. See ChatGPT.
What I am saying, do not pigeonhole yourself.
You may have non-tech followers that will learn.
@SpaceLifeForm while for years I did try to see if non tech people could get interested, the results were dismal. and I think all of them now use apple or windows / android and have no interest in changing. There are certainly intersections, but I prefer that those remain reasonably implicit.
However, in this case, my actual concern is for the tech followers, and @fosstodon which is about free software and related things. I try to respect this separation. I don't want to dilute #inxi etc.
Now I'm curious what your non tech interests are, but I totally understand if you don't want to share that.
Keep in mind that on the #Fediverse there aren't too many people completely disinterested in tech.
Farcebook, it ain't. 😂
@rl_dane @SpaceLifeForm that's what I thought too, but I started following someone who is not tech, quickly realized my error.
I believe the fallout from #twitter debacle is far more significant than you may realize. It certainly surprised me.
Don't underestimate how decent or nice people react to toxic waste like Elon is a fan of, that's creating refugees by the week now. Free speech is a 2 way street, people are free to leave twitter and they are, which confuses the toxic troll fans lol.
I can't deal with 500 character limits anymore.
I was on birdsite from 2008 to last year. I don't feel like playing that game anymore.
That's one of the big reasons why I was eager to help @amin alpha-test this instance. 😸
5k char limits!
And now that we have poll support you should get 6 options, I think. I can change the limit but I think I have it at 6.
I forgot this! 😂
From my perspective, smxi, I think you'll like this community if you like smaller communities that are solidly nerdy, but also have other interests.
A conversation about shell scripting can quickly morph into one about novel writing or Big Band music.
😸
Speaking of which @ivan and I are getting together for a project and I'm super-excited. :)
@amin @smxi @SpaceLifeForm @ivan
What's that going to be?
@rl_dane @smxi @SpaceLifeForm @ivan
@ivan we think we should share any details? I know it's not very set in stone yet.
I will say I loved his preliminary sketches. :)
@ivan @amin @smxi @SpaceLifeForm
I'm all ears
@amin, can we invite smxi onto polymaths? They're legit, they develop inxi and other awesome utilities.
inxi is a full featured CLI system information tool. It is available in most Linux distribution repositories, and does its best to support the BSDs. - GitHub - smxi/inxi: inxi is a full featured C...
Not tuneable exactly, but there are forks like glitch social and hometown (I think that's the name) that let you tune it per instance.
Polymaths, however, isn't technically on mastodon, or even a fork. It runs #GoToSocial a ground-up Mastodon-conpatible ActivityPub server written in Go, which is meant to be easy to set up for individuals and small instances.
@rl_dane @SpaceLifeForm @amin this kind of interoperable network is impressive. I wasn't sure the fediverse stuff talking between different tech would really work.
It really shows what a serious mistake Elon made buying a platform that offers so little yet does it so poorly
The cool thing is that GoToSocial doesn't even have a web interface.
You just access it with a mastodon client (mobile/cli/web). ANY client.
I've even used the"official" FOSS Mastodon android client with it, I problem.
Clarification: it has a web interface for user setup-kinds of things, and there is a simple read-only web interface for public posts, only (check out the link to this toot).
The part that I love is that the GtS web view for public toots even works on Dillo and Lynx. 😂
/settings thing is actually just a client ;) just one that doesn’t toot or timeline@mirabilos @rl_dane @smxi @SpaceLifeForm
Yup, it even asks you for your instance when logging in; you could use my instance's settings panel to edit your instance's settings. ;)
@mirabilos @rl_dane @smxi @SpaceLifeForm
Hmm, I bet that means that if a new feature for the admin panel is only in a release candidate, you could use the admin panel of an instance on the rc to use the feature even if your instance isn't on the rc.
Probably risky, though.
GoToSocial intentionally borrows the Mastodon API and works to stay compatible with Mastodon clients, which helps. :)
@rl_dane @smxi @SpaceLifeForm @amin yeah, it feels so ridiculous now
plus threads still don’t federate well, even if it got better
