When Hillary Clinton called MAGA supporters “deplorables,” it was in the news forever. We still talk about it today. But when Trump called his political enemies “vermin”—actually invoking the words of Adolf Hitler—the press just moves on like it’s nothing. They are failing us.
@georgetakei Trump's enablers aren't deplorable. They're despicable.
@georgetakei US allies are watching
@CanadianCrone @georgetakei alies at watching and enemies are laughing ...
@georgetakei they aren't merely failing, they are complicit

@georgetakei And if Republicans are, at best 40% of the population, half of those being hardcore, racist MAGA folk, that’s 1 in 5 Americans falling in that basket.

I think she was accurate.

@georgetakei Trump is ka ching and you don’t interrupt ka ching.

@georgetakei

It was humorous watching the media trip over themselves as they grew to understand her statement regarding the xenophobia, etc. in context.

First she said too much, then the skipped right to she didn't say enough. She didn't get credit for being the first, every time, to see the truth. He was/is Putin's puppet, the maga morons were/are deplorable, she nailed it all the time and crickets.

@georgetakei keep him out of the news cycle, nothing will chap is orange ass more than being ignored.

@georgetakei I agree. But also, the performative outrage over the "deplorables" comment was a full-court press from everyone in the right-wing media to the actual deplorables she was talking about.

The problem is that the left doesn't pull this kind of BS, where we all say, "Oh, how outrageous that Trump called us vermin!" because fuck that treasonous racist crook who gives a shit what he says.

But yeah - it leads to the media trying to appease clowns who're simply lying about their outrage.

@georgetakei it wasn't "the media" that blew it up, it was partisan GOP organizations. You are welcome to make "Vermin" t-shirts; I'm sure they'll sell well. Quit expecting the media to do your political organizing for you.
Major news outlets gave much less coverage to Trump’s “vermin” attack then they did Clinton’s “deplorables” remark

Media Matters for America
@CJPaloma @georgetakei yes but they did that because the GOP was making a big deal out of it.

@guacamayan @georgetakei…so "news" is whatever spoiled assed regressive corrupt piggs and their corrupt PR machines say it is?

Cheeeezzzus dude. You're not making yourself or your profession look good here. In any way.

You could just stop digging yourself into a hole, but my guess is you won't.

@georgetakei Some words to the wise:

A vote for #Trump is a vote for the end of your future as a free citizen in a #democracy. Don't give up your property rights, 401K, and freedom to speak freely to vote for anyone you believe will put a #fascist #dictator into PERMANENT, lifetime power. Congress WILL end elections if Trump wins if #Republicans occupy both houses, and nothing will get done EXCEPT for another $8 trillion going to #billionaires.

@georgetakei - There are similar currents underpinning political events in the British Isles as well. The press & politicians are incredibly relaxed about fascism and rule by oligarchy.

However, I don't think it is succeeding entirely. When people actually vote, they vote in favour of liberal democracy. See: Abortion Rights, for example.

It is all about the incipient arrival of a minority-majority country in BOTH USA & UK. It is freaking out our politicians.

@WiseWords @georgetakei

A lot of polling seems to show UK citizens have seen through the smoke and mirrors of HMG. That and the screw-ups they've made of everything they've touched.

That said, next GE will be interesting.

Also, not really a royalist, but a non-executive head of state helps - HMK has, in principle, the power to dismiss parliament if there "is fair reason to suppose that the opinion of the House is not the opinion of the electors" - eg failure to hold an election.

@WiseWords @georgetakei

Just to note -the above is not in any way partisan. When the GE comes around, I'll vote with my conscience, not according to any blind, unthinking party loyalty.

@georgetakei The press, most of it anyway, is no longer made up of journalists. Now it's either AI trained on authoritarian rhetoric, or parrots paid to spout that shit.
@georgetakei who owns the press? What benefits the owners more? It’s always follow the money.

@georgetakei

And Hillary Clinton was simply right…

@georgetakei maybe because misery loves company.
@georgetakei I don't think it's merely failure. It's collaboration
@georgetakei Not to mention his repeated references to the press as "The Enemy of the People."
@georgetakei it’s all about the money. The news outlets have never made this kind of money off of any other candidate. It’s disgusting.
Leslie Moonves on Donald Trump: “It May Not Be Good for America, but It’s Damn Good for CBS”

"Most of the ads are not about issues. They're sort of like the debates," the CBS CEO said.

The Hollywood Reporter
@georgetakei follow the money.
@gpjim @georgetakei Speaking of which, the day after Hillary said that, people were selling t-shirts with “deplorable” on them. Is someone selling “vermin” t-shirts?
@georgetakei Biden has called out "ultra-MAGAs" on a regular basis and it passes with out a lot of mention. What HRC did was to name several popular political positions and call people who supported them "a basket of deplorables." Essentially she told people like me who are moderates that she didn't need or want our vote. We were unworthy of election the One True Democratic Candidate.
@georgetakei
He's gotten away with untold examples of that
Because
He just follows up one outrageous exaltation with another just as bad or worse
He doubles down on ignorant, hateful & dangerous comments and its working for him
He has no morals, he cares only about himself & will do or say ANYTHING to get ahead
@georgetakei where's the responsibility to offer better choices? No, I think the responsibility for potention disaster lies with those who make the menu this go round. completely reckless to offer these worn out choices and straight up manipulation at this point. for clarity NO!
@georgetakei Perhaps the press is immune to Trump's BS, they hear it so often.
@georgetakei I thought she should have said "BUCKET of Deplorables" to invoke what the racists and hatemongers really are.
@georgetakei Who owns the 'press', baby?

@georgetakei

funny thing: they were never more deplorable than now.

@georgetakei and this again is right on .. nailed it..
@georgetakei @EricKHoward
No, they’re not “failing us”, they are complicit and should be disbanded
@georgetakei I just did a search for the word "vermin" in the WSJ. I wanted to believe that there would be something ... but no
@georgetakei @GreatDismal they may fail „us“, but they aren’t failing their shareholders 🤷🏼‍♂️
@georgetakei Because it's just another Thursday for them. People already filter it out like background noise. The press can't sell that.
@georgetakei Indeed , similarly from the UK compare and contrast Gordon Brown calling out one bigoted woman and Margaret Thatcher saying the entire unionised working class were “the enemy within “
@georgetakei It's Trump constantly ignoring any restraint of good taste and civility. If you do it often enough, it's expectation, not news.
For other politicians,people expect higher standards.
Sadly, this plays into the hands of those with lower standards.
@georgetakei I added the Vermin label to my profile.

@georgetakei Trump’s rhetoric is abysmal, but I don’t think there’s necessarily a double standard by the media here. Clinton described voters, “some of whom,” she said were “a basket of deplorables.” People immediately (deliberately) pretended she said ALL Trump supporters were deplorables, and complained so much the media naturally amplified the complaints.

Trump’s use of “vermin” is worse! But he’s not describing everyday voters, because he claims all regular people support him. It would be up to his political opponents to make a big deal of being called vermin, and for various reasons, they aren’t.

The media is many things, but chief among them is lazy. Trump spoon-feeds lazy media what they then regurgitate, and the rest of us expect the media to actually work, but they don’t.

@georgetakei Failed or become desensitised.

@georgetakei

the rich bought the press and are losing control of democracy.
they know they have poisoned the planet and the peasants will revolt
they need a dictatorship
trump is normalizing it. even if he fails they will get their way eventually
they have succumbed to a mindset where “winning” means earning enough money to insulate themselves from the damage they are creating by earning money in that way. It’s as if they want to build a car that goes fast enough to escape from its own exhaust
