Although #AP describes #Khalistan as a bloody armed #insurgency that shook #India in the 1970s and 1980s, it distorts it as #independence movement

AP acknowledges: “In 1984, Indian forces stormed the #GoldenTemple to flush out #separatists who had taken refuge there”

“The dead included #Sikh militant leader Jarnail Singh #Bhindranwale… leading the armed insurgency”

What to know about the Sikh independence movement following US accusation that activist was targeted

The U.S. has charged an Indian national in what prosecutors allege was a failed plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist at the behest of an unnamed Indian government official. The charges announced Wednesday against an Indian national arrested in June in Europe come two months after Canada's prime minister said there were credible accusations that India may have been linked to the killing of a Sikh activist near Vancouver, straining relations between the two countries. The U.S. case is particularly sensitive given the high priority that President Joe Biden has placed on improving ties with India and courting it to be a major partner in the push to counter China’s increasing assertiveness. India has outlawed the Sikh independence movement.

Indian official plotted to assassinate Sikh separatist leader, US says

U.S. authorities say an Indian government official directed a plot to assassinate a prominent Sikh separatist leader in New York City after he advocated for a sovereign state for Sikhs. They also announced murder-for-hire charges were unsealed in Manhattan federal court against a man arrested in the Czech Republic who was alleged to be part of the plot. The government official was not identified by name in the indictment. A White House National Security Council spokesperson said in a statement that it engaged in direct conversations with the Indian government at the highest levels about holding those responsible accountable after learning about the plot in July.
