Dark, dark true story I believe! We were army kids, friggin 18 at enlistment, and we were in Manheim like 20 miles down the road from Frankfurt where Christiana was (supposedly) and, yes, some folks had a Messiah complex and went up there and tried to save cute heroin chicks from the street. I didn't but I felt bad not at least trying but it was 1984-87 and drugs were massively stigmatized AND HIV was arriving and being used to dishonorably discharge people.

@mycotropic Wow. That's significantly less abstract a connection than I had. At that age I was aware of such things but more in a 'this is your brain on drugs' presentation. Quite a different thing.
I just went and reviewed the plotline on Wikipedia and honestly kind of wish I hadn't.
It is a true story although the film is a 'biographical drama' based on a 'non-fiction book' so there is undoubtedly going to be varying levels of 'true' in the movie depiction.

My wife works in addiction medicine and the humanity of the lives folks are living is withering. Seriously triggers Messiah complex stuff for me as it always has but it's also not my area of expertise. At least we're practicing risk mitigation and dumping Nancy's shitty stigmatism in my part of the country.
