Unbelievable Black Friday sale at my local library, any of the books I’ve been wanting to read for free and I can take it back for a new book when I’m done
@starchy I really like REIs approach, they close for black friday and ask people to volunteer at your local environmental nonprofit. Or pick up trash at your local park.
@starchy I can get 75 books (or CDs or LPs) at a time for free. Absolutely unbeatable
@starchy I can get up to 30 books straight to my phone from my library! Talk about splurging
@starchy Libraries are like something from a parallel universe. Imagine a whole world built on library principles.
@joncounts @starchy relics from a time when universal access to culture was important.
@joncounts @starchy Every day is Christmas at the library and librarians are a mixture of Santa Claus and Sherlock Holmes.
@starchy C'mon bro yachts and summer homes don't pay for themselves!
@starchy don't forget those video games you've wanted to play, same situation!
@starchy unfortunately ours is closed till Monday because 'budget'.

@starchy

My library is even better! I can get two books for free! 100% return policy (if I bring it back within two weeks).

@starchy

And the best of all: accessible without #DRM !

@starchy Where are you? In the UK, that 's the way public libraries work. Paid for out of taxes, take books out, read, return, take more books out...
@DevraWiz @starchy
They are riffing on that ... it really is a great deal, having a library.
A little tongue-in-cheek description, wink-wink, only we know it was there all along.
Use it or lose it, these days.

@starchy

Seems the only kind of Black Friday sale worth of my time.

@starchy Everyone should visit and support their local libraries.

If you do have a library card, you can also use Libby to check out audio and ebooks online as well.

All over the world, local libraries offer millions of ebooks and audiobooks. You can borrow them — for free, instantly — with a library card and Libby: the award-winning, much-loved app for libraries.

@starchy If they are not sneaking in a subscription fee and some ads are they even serious about their mission ? Have they got a techbro CEO at least ?

@starchy Not my library, but a partner one, has literal VINYLS you can borrow. All I have to do is place a hold on my library's system and in a few weeks I got the new 1989 album. :3

Plus mine has games. I use it to try out games I'm curious about before buying or just didn't feel like plopping 60usd on it.

@Bo @starchy Love this. I don't think libraries here (UK) have vinyl any more but I did buy a classical box set from a book shop which clearly came from a library because it has the label of stamped withdrawal dates inside.

Libraries are the absolute best for all sorts of reasons! I still think about how years ago I should have been fined something like £5 for having a tonne of overdue books and the librarian was like oh we can't possibly charge you that, I'll just cancel the fine 🙂 Librarians!

@starchy it’s a scam; you won’t be able to keep them.
@a_a_a that's a feature - have you seen my shelves?
@starchy, my adolescent serves as a library page, while my partner holds a position on the library board. Despite this, we keep receiving invoices for overdue books. If that's indeed a feature, where would I find the option to unsubscribe or cancel my subscription?
@a_a_a Many libraries have ended late fines - my town doesn't have them. Maybe your partner could raise it with the library board if they haven't already

@starchy, she’s out shopping, splurging on Black Friday deals. I'm unsure if it's the right moment to mention an invoice for just 55 cents, but since you raised the topic, I'll direct your Mastodon account concern to her attention.

[ It was enjoyable chatting with you. Have a pleasant evening! ]

@starchy @a_a_a reminds me of when I attended the University of New Orleans in the 1980s. At the checkout desk in the college library was a sign that said: "To err is human. To forgive is not library policy". Stuck with me these nearly 40 years. 😊
@starchy library lies, everyone knows library's are covers for bit coin mining
@starchy Last time I was in a library I ended up finding a body in the men's room!
@starchy Yeah? Well, MY library is letting me take more than one book home. Crazy! 😜
@starchy Wouldn't it be amazing if they could do this all year round?

@starchy

Here it is even more unbelievable, we have "onleihe" here in germany. If you have a library card, you don't even have to leave the house, you can borrow books etc. and read them on your computer or e-reader. And they are returned automatically, so you can't forget to return them and therefore don't incur any penalties.

(Probably similar services also exist in other countries)
