This is a good idea, and every club should have one of these

@mcc Agree 100%.

Though if the venue is small enough, I’ve found a few sound board engineers who appreciate the need for ear protection and have given me some of theirs.

@mcc It’s a shame musician’s filters are so much harder to make than simple foam earplugs. They keep the sound very natural, just 15-25dB quieter.
@mcc IIRC in Belgium it is mandatory for a club to provide earplugs for free
@peacegiverman Damn, that's nice. Does the bar have to let you have water for free, too?
@peacegiverman @mcc @frumble Damn. I thought the 50ct plugs in many clubs in Germany were nice, but free hearing protection in all clubs is even better!

@mcc for free, ideally, but yes.

there's a venue near me that has notoriously loud line arrays, and I'm never quite sure if they're even operating within legal limits, but at least they give you free earplugs at the door!

@mcc free earplugs are pretty common around SF bay area venues, but vending machines are naturally cute

@mcc
That's an awesome idea! Not a bad price, either. But it presupposes that you're carrying a toonie. South of the border, someone would need to carry eight quarters.

...or two gold dollars, or four half dollars or... twenty dimes?

I mean, first off, you'd need to carry cash in the first place!

Meh. I don't care about the problems. It's still a great idea.

@mcc “WTF who is stupid enough to put chewing-gum in their ears?” said someone who drink a little too much. 😅
@mcc Just now at a show I attended I had an entire blister pack of foam plugs and I pressed them on everyone seated near me👂😎👌

@mcc Great idea!

I finally bought a nice pair of reusable earplugs I just keep on my keychain. I'm getting old and my ears just don't recover the same way anymore.

@mcc It's also a legal requirement in Switzerland to offer them for free at concerts or clubs which are loud. But no free water. ;-)
@mcc
Honestly, if the sound system is loud enough to cause hearing damage (85dBA), they should be free at coat check. But yes, that's better than nothing
@skry
@mcc $2! I guess it’s better than not offering, but that’s gotta be a 500% or more markup
@timmy @mcc Those earplugs are about 15¢ Canadian per pair. If it’s one pair per $2, that’s closer to a 1300% markup.
@mcc I believe in at least where i am it is mandated that one can buy earplugs at least from the staff, e.g. from the cashier of bartender
@4censord next you're going to say you get free healthcare...
@mcc I went to see Sunn O))) in London once. It's the only time I saw earplugs handed out to the audience at the door.
@BackFromTheDud Ha ha yeah when I went to see Boris in Boston one of the audience members had brought a big bag of headphones and was just handing them out to everyone at the front of the pit. Afterwards, I wished I'd partaken
@mcc With SUNN O))) I decided to take my own, especially as that was my SECOND time seeing them!
@BackFromTheDud I have a pair of high quality earplugs I purchased to take to concerts and manage to forget every single time I go to a concert
@mcc Agreed! Clubs should also ask for Toonies more often, but that is another subject entirely...

@mcc In Switzerland every venue that plays live music has to offer free ear protection to all visitors.
Usually those can be received at the bar, sometimes at the entrance as well.

Obviously they usually just put the shitty foam earplugs there that cost almost nothing to make and muffle the sound in a way that I don't like but it's there.
