@mobilizon do you have an ActivityPub account from which you only post in english ? I cannot read French but would like to follow the progress on your promising project.

Alternativaly, do you know if it is possible to configure the Mastodon account (or client) so to only show posts in languages I'm able to read ?

#MastoHelp #MastodonUsability

@strk yes, that setting is in the web interface under Settings > Preferences > Other

@CodingItWrong it looks like #Tusky is missing support for setting this, should it respect the setting of the account ?

Pachli 2.0.0 released

Pachli 2.0.0 is now available, and can translate posts for you. This uses your server’s support for translation (if enabled by your server administrators). Improving translation is the through-line for the Pachli 2.x releases. Future releases in the 2.x line will support translation whether or not it is enabled on your server by carrying out privacy-preserving translation on your device. Read on for more details about this, and other changes in this release.

Pachli

@nikclayton @CodingItWrong if I read correctly Patchli will just delegate translation to you instance so basically bypassing the cost protection which isn't nice. By cost protection I mean what has been mentioned here: https://mastodon.uno/@devol/111459579036160520

@devol

Devol :fediverso: (@[email protected])

@strk no, perchè ha un costo abbastanza elevato e si è limitati con il numero di traduzioni. Quindi è meglio non tradurre troppo per non sforare.

Mastodon Social - Italia

@strk @CodingItWrong @devol it's not bypassing anything.

As currently implemented, translation in #Pachli requires the user's server to positively advertise that translation is supported via the server's API.

If the server disables that then Pachli (and any other client that supports that API) will disable translation.

See https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/statuses/#translate and https://docs.joinmastodon.org/entities/Instance/#translation-enabled

Publish, interact, and view information about statuses.

@strk @CodingItWrong @devol that thread was also about automatically translating posts without explicit user action.

#Pachli doesn't do that - the user must explicitly request each translation, precisely so that servers are not sent a barrage of unnecessary translation requests.

A future version (probably 2.2 or 2.3) of Pachli will support on-device translation. If that is enabled then automatic translation without user action may also be available.

@strk might as well try it to see, I think
