Do you #BoardGames folks love Castles of Burgundy? I don’t have it but I’ve heard it described as a modern classic. Tell me why you love it, and why you recommend it.
@emmahunneyball it is a kind of weird fish TBH but the whole is greater than the individual parts. Usual Feld point salad but the various mechanisms tie together reasonably well. I like it but the children hate it so it doesn’t get out much. File this under not very helpful or illuminating replies!

@CTD @emmahunneyball I agree about the game. It’s fairly easy to learn but can have some complex decisions.

Everyone I’ve introduced it to loves so it gets played fairly regularly here.

@CTD @emmahunneyball Bingo. it's possibly his best point salad game and it scales relatively well (tile luck is an issue at 2, and down time is an issue at 4p, but those are slight problems compared to scaling in other games IMHO). I had it and played it a lot for a while and then got rid of it when it fell out of fashion in my group.

I'm a big advocate that everyone should play a great designer's "best" game at least once. If for nothing else, it would give you a reference point. For Stefen Feld, that's CoB.

@grayson @CTD @emmahunneyball

it's possibly his best point salad game

You might be right if he hadn't made Trajan, which has the audacity to use mancala as an action selection mechanism. Nothing can beat that. It's perfect.

@dbendit @CTD @emmahunneyball
Trajan *is* quite good. I dare say I like it more than CoB, but that's not a widely held view in my experience.

Also, Trajan (to me) benefits from more players which is also a harder sell.

@emmahunneyball Played it once with the Vineyards expansion. Can't say I loved it. Not enough ways to mess with other players. The game is all about making do with what's given you, and then it ends and points are scored and chances are you lost.

That being said, feel free to send me a BGA invite. 😄

@Mollarom I’m probably less of a hazard building towns than landing aircraft 🤣
@emmahunneyball It’s a great game. Lots of choices and paths to victory, plus some very satisfying opportunities to trigger combos. Not difficult to learn. I have only played it on BGA, and it’s one of the best of their collection.
@emmahunneyball I've only played it digitally, and I think it will stay that way. The maintenance between rounds is nice to let the computer manage, and the many tiles that need a reference card to figure out what they do is the biggest thing preventing me from trying it with my family who can only handle light-weight games. Playing it online takes away the pain points and then the game shines for me. Definitely worth trying!
@brentnichols
I agree that the icons are not self-explanatory sometimes. At the beginning of each round, I usually explain the yellow ones for everyone.

@emmahunneyball
I think it's a fun two player game. It's a bit on the long side when more than two.

The solo mode is also fun, but a little bit different than the multiplayer version. A little fiddly with all the pieces, but inserts or bags makes it easier.

@emmahunneyball I only just got into it after backing the big deluxe version and I have zero regrets. Thoroughly enjoyable.
@neildixon it’s the big deluxe edition that I’m looking at. It looks amazing.
@emmahunneyball @neildixon that's what I learned on, another player's deluxe edition. Nice chunky tiles, beautiful sculpted castles.

@emmahunneyball It's one of my favorites because the level of point salad and length of play are both right at my personal sweet spots. There are lots of choices, but it feels more forgiving than something like Calico or Cascadia.

I'm also fond of the simpler dice version as a comfort game that plays faster and takes less set-up on a tired evening.

@htdrake thank you, I’ll have a look at the dice game too.
@emmahunneyball I love it! It plays quick, has just the right combo of luck and skill and has tons of ways to tackle thing. The version on BGA is top notch. Be glad to play you there some day
@jda thank you! Yes, let’s get a game going on BGA!
@emmahunneyball what is your BGA username? I'll create a table
