@ai6yr My brother and his wife are in Rio on holiday. Felt like 139° with heat index. Lightning storm last night!
@ai6yr Swift shows were canceled
@ai6yr You may have missed all the flooding in Northern Africa too. It's not an area where a cursory look at western media would alert one too. https://www.africanews.com/2023/11/16/floods-at-least-111-dead-and-700000-displaced-in-the-horn-of-africa-ngo/
Floods: at least 111 dead and 700,000 displaced in the Horn of Africa - NGO | Africanews

At least 111 people, including 16 children, have died and 700,000 have been displaced by floods caused in recent weeks by torrential rains in the Horn of Africa, the NGO Save the Children announced on Thursday.

I wouldn't say it's in northern Africa, but in the east
@DavidBruchmann @exador23 my friend @laureen keeps tabs on Africa, but she's not posting here much (yet). Maybe she can suggest some sources I can auto-feed to my instance for some high level monitoring there.
@DavidBruchmann @exador23 Growing up in the US, I don't think I ever had to learn where countries were in Africa while in school. Europe, yes (because of WW2). Only places the US fought wars in or conquered, really.

@ai6yr @exador23

For some countries I better look up too!

Your friend is not posting so much, else her feed would perhaps already be good.

@exador23 @ai6yr One more reason I'm thankful for Mastodon: I follow a couple people who focus on sharing climate-related news, so I saw stories like this one from earlier this month:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-worst-floods-in-decades-kill-29-in-somalia-hit-towns-across-east/
Worst floods in decades kill 29 in Somalia, hit towns across East Africa

Authorities have scrambled to rescue thousands of stranded people from the floodwater, which comes on the heels of East Africa’s worst drought in 40 years
