One out of every 200 people in Gaza have been killed by the Israeli army — and the bombing still hasn’t stopped.

Let that sink in for a moment, then remember how Israeli authorities are trying to make Western publics believe they aren’t targeting civilians. This is a massacre.

More than 11,100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. They include doctors, journalists, professors and poets.

@parismarx i wonder how often this ends up quoted https://biblehub.com/1_samuel/18-7.htm
1 Samuel 18:7 - Saul Envies David

And as the women danced, they sang out: Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.

@parismarx The explanation for civiliam deaths is “Hamas hides among civilians purposely using them as human shields”.
It requires a change of logic not just rephrasing. I will try a WWII example.

You can think:
- evil allies are carpet bombing Germany, killing civilians who don’t want Hitler anymore.
- Hitler is a p.o.s. If he surrendered he would spare German civilians’ lives.

What you think is based on your beliefs.
@notwithstanding @parismarx Carpet bombing is considered a war crime now, for good reason. If you have to compare actions to that, you've already lost the moral high ground.

@dragora @parismarx I know that. Israel didn’t carpet bomb anything ever - even though they have the means to do that.

The point is how you think is determined by your beliefs. In this case: who you put the blame on is determined by your beliefs.

The responsibility is Hamas’, them invading taking hostages is what started this conflict. If they release the hostages, there will be a ceasefire. But they would rather put the Palestinian people in harms way.

@dragora @parismarx (and I am not even playing that “war crime” card here, I am sure you know about hostage taking and hiding in hospitals)

@parismarx

It’s WAY more than that. They have no way of gauging an accurate count.

@RodneyPetersonTalent @parismarx In which case, how can your assertion be any more accurate than theirs?

@scottishwildcat @parismarx

Assuming they’re only reporting verified deaths and not pumping up numbers due to speculation I’m definitely more on the money. No one really knows the number but collateral deaths from starvation and breathing in all the debris etc are going to be very high.

Why news outlets and the U.N. rely on Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry for death tolls

Why news outlets and the U.N. rely on Gaza Health Ministry for death tolls

The Washington Post, like other news organizations, cannot independently verify death tolls in the war between Israel and Hamas.

@ViciousBabushka Even without a politicized health ministry, it's difficult to imagine how they could come up with reliable accounts in the midst of this war. (Is Hamas even known for effective governance?) Regardless, I still assume that the human cost is high, certainly higher than many national publics are willing to tolerate.
@parismarx the hypocrisy and double standard in your argument is unbelievable. 9000 civilians killed in Mosul while fighting ISIS makes the US a hero. Israel fighting Hamas and it’s a “massacre”. No wonders Israeli see this as antisemitism. Any ideas how to take out Hamas without civilian casualties? I’m waiting to hear one good idea
@parismarx
This conflict is so complex that anyone who claims only one side is at fault is definitely wrong.
I've begrudgingly listened to the episode, but I don't know if I like to see such an episode on a tech podcast. I would have been more willing to listen to it if it didn't come a few days after a horrible attack on Israeli civilians that you completely failed to mention.
