Disney is planning to launch an NFT marketplace for Star Wars & Pixar characters powered by Dapper Labs, the company behind NBA Top Shot.

I can only imagine that this is someone's good idea from 2021 that got stuck in corporate development hell and took too long to ship.

Sunk cost is a hell of a drug. Instead of reading the room, Disney is really going to launch an NFT marketplace in 2023. 😬

@carnage4life as if they could not get any worse, they try their hand at NFTs.
@BlackthornMeadow @carnage4life they gonna finance it by tax writes of made movies and not paying writers
@mrt181 @BlackthornMeadow @carnage4life They will make it worse by introducing them as “AI Generated NFTs”
@carnage4life wow. I don't really understand NFTs but even I know that's a terrible idea right now!
@carnage4life Thanks for this. In a morning already filled with Middle-East updates and other awfulness, this totally serious but of business news has brought a lightness to my day. Seriously, thanks!

@carnage4life Not only that, but sunk cost into something that any normal person who knew a little about it could tell you was dumb *from the start*.

Which is not at all surprising, to be honest.

@carnage4life Are they just not paying attention at all?
@carnage4life have you seen those rock jpegs start selling again

@carnage4life Ug, this is the same thing the NHL is doing. Both of the companies won’t admit that they made a mistake and take the write down.

@carnage4life the funniest thing about this is that if Disney is planning to launch an NFT market is because there is people willing to buy NFT shits.
@carnage4life reeks of an out of touch board member demanding it
@carnage4life yes and no. i’ve worked with the top brass at companies of this scale. the truth is, entertainment execs were so excited by the idea that consumers would be willing to pay out the ass for literally *nothing* – digital certificates “authenticating“ digital “goods” – that even after the crash, many cling to the hope that it’s going to make a comeback
