Etsy secretly banned the phrase “from the river to the sea” on sellers’ wares. While pro-Israel items like shirts with the Israeli flag bearing the slogan “These colors don’t run, they reload,” have been deemed fine by Etsy’s policy team. https://www.platformer.news/p/how-banning-one-palestinian-slogan
How banning one Palestinian slogan roiled Etsy

The company secretly banned the phrase “from the river to the sea” on sellers’ wares. Some employees aren’t happy

@taylorlorenz Etsy has largely become a lame Temu reseller site anyway. They'll be easy to never use again. They're good for getting ideas, but then I just go to either Temu or do a quick Google search to find it elsewhere for less.
@snoopfrog @taylorlorenz Their pricing structure is not friendly to creators last I checked.
‘From the river to the sea’ threatens to drown out any chance for peace

The phrase is code for eradicating the state of Israel, but some right-wing Israelis don't shy away from similar calls regarding Palestinians.

@Nazani @taylorlorenz

In other words: no peace without apartheid?

@iju @taylorlorenz
You'd have to ask the author.

@Nazani @taylorlorenz

The question was mostly rhetorical.

But I do confess hating this modern world where every political slogan and hand-gesture used by left-from-far-right is interpreted to mean aims of the far right, and then treated as such.

For example,
👌🏻= white power
River-to-sea = genocide
Black lives = white genocide
Defend police = mob rule

It's not going to end well.

@taylorlorenz Calls to genocide shortly after a mass slaughter and torture atrocities Nazi Stormtroopers would recognize? Why ban that? River-to-the-sea is a well recognized dog whistle.
@taylorlorenz one is promoting genocide, the other self-defense, but yeah, totally the same thing
@ambiorickx from the river to the sea is not promoting genocide but supporting Israel’s war right now is.
@danedeasy you just knew which one I meant which proves my point

@ambiorickx @taylorlorenz

I disagree totally. They are BOTH talking about Genocide.

Netanyahu has said they will keep going until all HAMAS is gone.

Problem: Who is HAMAS and who is Palestinian?
Not every Palestinian is part of HAMAS. It's like finding all the Vietcong, or Taliban. And we all know how well that worked.

If Netanyahu is going to kill all the HAMAS people, he will have to kill all 2 million people in Gaza.

@taylorlorenz Given where the phrase is from, I suspect a fair number of customers aren't, either!
@taylorlorenz Completely reasonable to criticize Etsy for failing to have open and fairly applied standards, but "river to the sea" is a call for ethnic cleansing.
