Hey Americans, feeling politically powerless? You have an election tomorrow. Fascists are targeting those boring state and local positions and using them for everything from abortion restrictions to book bans to criminalizing trans healthcare. It's up to you to stop them.

@maxkennerly

Special election in Massachusetts’ Worcester & Hampshire Senate District to replace the previous senator who resigned to take another job.

One of those easy to miss because this is an off year for Massachusetts November elections.

@jimgon @maxkennerly A bunch of MA city council and school board elections are tomorrow, too. (I checked my sample ballot and all of mine are running unopposed, except for the library trustees, which I assume means some hard-to-identify subset of the candidates are nuts and/or nazis.)
@maxkennerly Yes, among other things on ballots in Colorado are extremely important school board elections with candidates who want to ban books and eliminate history classes that teach facts that are uncomfortable to them. You have to do a little digging to be sure you're not voting for these people. Check endorsements by Colorado Education Assn., trusted state reps, etc. Newspaper articles and candidate websites don't always provide the info you need, IMO, but they do offer some clues.

@UncivilServant @maxkennerly Note that this tool will not show candidates in your local elections, which may be the only thing on the ballot. (I just checked mine and it only showed federal and state officials who aren't up for election this year, and not the city councilors who are.)

@wollman @maxkennerly Thanks for the heads-up. It showed a local referendum in my city (whether to allow a casino), in addition to the state legislative races on the ballot.

That being said, Richmond is a state capital, even if a rather small and sleepy state capital, so that might play a role. They may not have much info on local races outside of major metro areas and state capitals.

Virginia has statewide elections tomorrow, the first with new district maps as well.

@maxkennerly Spoken like someone who doesn't see the US for what it really is. People here don't care about other people. Perhaps your life has been too privileged for you to realized the depth of that.
@maxkennerly I would vote if u could, but atleast this is the last election I can't vote in

@maxkennerly

In Tarrant County (TX), there are no candidates on the ballot. It is a "State of Texas Constitutional Amendment Election".

@maxkennerly hey, the dem delegate pulled out of my district race and now we have a republican running unopposed. No news about it so only found out when checking sample ballots last week. But yeah, I guess this is on me when my state goes red for "not voting hard enough"! /s

@maxkennerly

Local and state elections are just as important as federal.

In New Jersey, all state house and senate seats are up for elections. In certain counties, school boards will be elected.

@maxkennerly hmm those all sound good to me
@maxkennerly 😂 I only laugh to keep from crying, relying on those with the least power struggling to survive day to day, while all the rich powerful pricks and those in leadership positions cry “save us from ourselves” is pathetic
@maxkennerly
I did that, last week. And it looks like in Ohio, we're going to kick the asses of the Enemies of Democracy, again.
@maxkennerly Voted early on Saturday. Still feel pretty politically powerless. Why? Because there were so few actual choices nevermind candidates I thought would actually represent my preferences. County court: one name. City judges: choose 4; 4 names. State supreme court: choose 6; 8 names. The second ballot measure is just to save time passing a renewal every decade. https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup I think they missed one of the state court candidates but see for yourself.

@maxkennerly our political parties hate and despise regular people and hate and despise voting systems that would make it actually a good strategy to vote for someone other than the winning duopoly.
